Los Angeles County Schools Report 3,186 New Covid Cases Among Kids, Staff In 2nd Week Back

As the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors considers mandating vaccination for all eligible students who on campuses, Los Angeles Director of Public Health Barbara Ferrer today announced a significant rise in Covid cases at area schools.

The Los Angeles County Board of Education will consider on Thursday a proposal that would require all eligible students age 12 and over in the L.A. Unified School District to get vaccinated. The requirement would pertain to those students wishing to attend in-person classes.

On Sunday, the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health reported 11 new deaths from Covid-19 and 2,122 new positive cases.

More than 5,200 Covid cases have been detected among K-12 students in Los Angeles County over the past two weeks, a number the public health director called “sobering” today. According to figures released by the county Wednesday, 5,207 infections were identified among students in the county between Aug. 15-29 — along with 729 cases among school staff.

Los Angeles County Health Department officials today released the first data on Covid cases during the first week of school: In the 24 hours between Tuesday at 8 a.m and Wednesday at 8 a.m, the Los Angeles School District recorded 118 new cases. Classes resumed on Monday.

The Television Academy said Thursday that attendees at next month’s Primetime Emmys Awards and Creative Arts Emmy Awards will be required to provide a negative Covid test in addition to being fully vaccinated. This year’s ceremonies are being limited to nominees and a guest with the rise of the Delta variant this summer hampering the return to fully live in-person events in Los Angeles and around the country.

On Wednesday, Los Angeles County reported more than 4,000 new daily Covid cases for the first time since January. The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health confirmed 4,046 new cases of Covid-19 and 34 new deaths. New Covid cases in Los Angeles have been ranging a few hundred above and below the 3,000 mark for more than a week.

The order, which will go into effect just before midnight on Thursday, will require operators of concerts, sports games and other high-attendance events to post signs notifying attendees that they must wear a mask at all times except when eating and drinking and for employees to enforce the mandate verbally. The new mandate comes as the Los Angeles Dodgers are in the midst of the 2021 MLB season and with the Rams and Chargers beginning NFL preseason games at SoFi Stadium.
