A young Lockerbie couple cancelled their holiday to Rhodes – and climbed Criffel instead.
Aidan Kevans and Jess Cameron, both aged 20, made the decision after arriving at Edinburgh airport last Monday to find there had been an air traffic control meltdown.
Tens of thousands of UK travellers were trapped overseas after the UK’s air traffic control system failed due to a technical fault on one of the busiest days of the year for flights.
Planes due to depart were initially put on hold but flights were eventually cancelled when the scale of the problem became apparent.
Aidan said: “Jess and I set out on Monday morning to jet off to Theologos, Rhodes.
“Shortly after arriving at the airport we’d heard the news that all UK flights were grounded.
“Hopeful that it would pass, we wined and dined as everyone else in the airport did.
“The place was swarmed with uncertainty. Every hour we would check the board to find another delay until 6pm when our flight simply disappeared from the information board.
“It wasn’t until I received a notification from EasyJet that we found our flight had been cancelled. With only one week before Jess and I returned to university, our holiday wishes were crushed.
“Among the masses we made our way to collect our bags from the carousel, which was bittered by the fact we hadn’t landed in a foreign country before collecting our bags.
“We spent hours with no contact from any representatives before I made the difficult decision to cancel our holiday.”
After hours spent calling airline and holiday companies, Aidan and Jess “decided to quit sulking and make the most of an unfortunate decision”.
The following morning they headed to Alton Towers before coming home to climb Criffel on Thursday.
