The Maccabees’ Felix White on how Johnny Marr influenced the direction of new music with 86TVs

The Maccabees’ Felix White has spoken about how Johnny Marr helped steer the direction of new music with his comeback band 86TVs.The group – comprising Felix’s brothers Hugo and Will (the latter formerly of mid-noughties indie band Talk Taxis and his solo project BLANc) and The Noisettes’ drummer Jamie Morrison – recently released their debut single ‘Worn Out Buildings’.Speaking to NME in a recent interview about writing post-Maccabees and the direction of the new band, Felix explained how The Smiths guitarist and songwriter gave them some important advice for their new material. The band recalled that for the first year of the project, “it was completely instrumental and we were writing music we thought could be a soundtrack or we’d get someone else to sing on”.However, eventually they were convinced by Marr to sing on the tracks themselves.“I think The Maccabees had just split up, but I’d read Johnny Marr’s autobiography, which I loved, and it was a really striking time to read it because a lot of his life has been about reinvention and change,” Felix recalled. He continued: “So there was a correlation in my head at that particular moment in my life with what Johnny’s book had said. I bumped into him at the NME Awards and said, ‘Can I send you some music? We’ve just been doing some instrumental music and we don’t know if it’s good’.

Deadline’s Contenders Television: The Nominees Virtual Event Kicks Off Today

Celebrating television might feel like a wasted effort right now, especially since 11,500 writers and 160,000 actors are walking the picket lines for the ongoing WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. But it would be unfair to overlook the extraordinary work of so many Emmy-worthy creatives, even if the ongoing dispute between the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers prevents writers and actors from talking about the very series that got them a ticket to the 75th annual Primetime Emmy Awards in the first place. Sadly, everyone will have to wait until January 2024 to see who will accept their just rewards. But this year’s Contenders Television: The Nominees virtual livestream event that kicks off Saturday at 10 a.m. PT will certainly make it worth the wait.

recently shuttered “New York, New York,” and wrote the songs for the Disney movies “Moana” and “Encanto,” along with some new tunes for the live-action “The Little Mermaid.” His Tony Award-winning “In the Heights” was turned into a Warner Bros. movie, and he directed Netflix’s musical film “Tick, Tick… Boom!”.As Broadway’s only celebrity composer (who’s not a pop singer), a brand new musical by Miranda would be an instant draw for ticket-buyers and a major coup for the struggling theater business.A premiere date and location are not yet known, though a tryout of the show would be a boon for the Public Theater, which was recently forced to lay off 19% of its staff and slash programming for budgetary reasons.Wherever it lands, he’s picked a fascinating title. Some viewers will remember the culty 1979 film “The Warriors,” which is fun to watch now for its authentic shots of the bad old days of New York City.
