Jon Burlingame Laura Karpman is one of very few composers who has made a genuine difference in the scoring community. A five-time Emmy winner, she co-founded the Alliance for Women Film Composers, which is widely credited with helping to propel the nearly invisible community of female music writers into prominence. No one asks “why aren’t there any women film composers?” anymore.
As the first female music-branch governor in the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences, Karpman implemented sweeping changes on the diversity, equity and inclusion front and was largely responsible for the admission of dozens of previously underrepresented voices. But this year people are talking about her music as much as her advocacy, with notable scores for both “American Fiction” and “The Marvels.” She has just finished scoring the second season of the animated Marvel series “What If…?” with her wife, fellow composer Nora Kroll-Rosenbaum (who also conducted all of “The Marvels”). It’s slated to debut Dec.
22 on Disney+. 2023 has been a banner year for you, having music played at London’s BBC Proms, two talked-about film releases and a couple of television projects. What’s it been like? As unbelievable as it all is, it felt like something I’ve been ready for, for a long time.
So it’s this combination of pinching myself and feeling deeply satisfied, gratified, but more than any of that, seen. When I recorded at Abbey Road and Nora conducted, these people got my musicality and Nora’s musicianship. They got what we were trying to do.
I felt like I caught up to the world and the world caught up to me. Tell us about your music for “American Fiction,” in which Jeffrey Wright plays an author named Thelonious “Monk” Ellison. I recall that, back

We had a question for Jeffrey Wright, but we knew we had to be careful with it. The star of Cord Jefferson‘s award-season darling, “American Fiction,” is in the running for a Best Actor Oscar nomination and has already won several critics’ group awards.
The topic of race in America is a challenging one to discuss nowadays. On the one hand, you have various groups of non-white people who are exhausted trying to explain how racism runs rampant.
Jaden Thompson Museum of the Moving Image and the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation have announced the winners of the 2023 Sloan Student Grand Jury Prize and 2023 Sloan Student Discovery Prize, who will each receive $20,000 to develop their science-themed screenplays. Justine Beed of USC has won the Grand Jury Prize for her series pilot “La Forza,” while Lara Palmqvist of University of Texas at Austin was awarded the Discovery Prize for her feature script entitled “The Garden.” Beed and Palmqvist were selected from a group of 10 nominees by a jury including Dr.
Angelique Jackson Erika Alexander got her start as a teen on “The Cosby Show” before assuming the breakout role of attorney Maxine Shaw on “Living Single.” But it’s her latest performance in “American Fiction,” a satire that critiques our culture’s obsession with stereotypes, that’s put her in a conversation she’s never been in before — that of awards season contender. Alexander plays Coraline, the love interest of Jeffrey Wright’s Thelonious “Monk” Ellison, a cantankerous author who challenges the industry’s perceptions of “Black entertainment.” On Dec. 5, just hours before sitting down with Variety, Alexander learned she’d been nominated in the supporting category at the Independent Spirit Awards; she attended last year’s ceremony as a guest.
Pat Saperstein Deputy Editor There might be more kitchens in Max’s series “Julia” than in every Nancy Meyers movie put together. The list starts with the kitchen at Julia Child’s home in Cambridge, Mass.
Da’Vine Joy Randolph and Alden Ehrenreich haven’t taken many vacation days recently. She’s the breakout star of Alexander Payne’s heartwarming comedy “The Holdovers,” where she portrays Mary, the head cook of a boarding school in the 1970s. (She also showed her range as the jaded manager to a troubled pop star in HBO’s controversial summer series “The Idol.”) He’s the familiar face who played a young Han Solo in the “Star Wars” franchise and, this year, shows off his dramatic chops as a toxic boyfriend and financial analyst in Chloe Domont’s Sundance darling “Fair Play.” Here, they compare notes on preparation, keeping momentum and dating other actors.
Jeffrey Wright and Taraji P. Henson sit down to discuss their acclaimed performances — as cantankerous novelist Thelonious “Monk” Ellison in “American Fiction” and sensuous singer Shug Avery in “The Color Purple” — Wright is eager to address one topic first: their shared hometown. It turns out both acting titans hail from Washington, D.C.
While fans wait for “Gangs Of London” Season 3, how about a film directed by one of the TV show’s directors? “Mayhem!” doesn’t star anyone from the British crime series, but it operates in a similar vein: a crime-ridden tale about violence, vengeance, and the value of family. “He’s changing the narrative.” The new comedy, “American Fiction,” features a wickedly sharp and bitingly funny premise. The feature-length directorial debut of Cord Jefferson, a producer and writer on acclaimed series such as “Watchmen,” “Station Eleven” and “Master Of None,” the film is adapted from Percival Everett’s “Erasure,” a brilliant indictment of the way modern culture handles race, a pointed satire about the commodification of marginalized voices and a writer forced to confront himself and his own creative integrity.
