Film: Spring Arts Preview 2024

Barbenheimer. Barbie, listed in our 2023 spring movie preview, and Oppenheimer, which was not, had yet to assert their primacy over the year’s box office and pop culture conversation.Few conceived those two films would spark a phenomenon that rippled through media, fashion, merchandising, music, and awards show after awards show after awards show. After all the hype and hot takes, red carpet looks, historic victories and milestones, the Barbenheimer convo only really finally abated with the Oscar wins that shuffled Barbie, Ken, and Oppy off the stage in March, ushering cinema into the spring/summer season. Now, new cinematic fascinations await, new soundtracks of the summer, your next new favorite character or performance, some star-making smash that’ll keep the world talking until 2025.

Fans react to Beyoncé’s cover of The Beatles’ ‘Blackbird’ from ‘Cowboy Carter’

Beyoncé’s cover of The Beatles classic ‘Blackbird’, included on her new album ‘Cowboy Carter’, has prompted a lot of reactions among fans.‘Cowboy Carter’ was released today (March 29), her eighth studio album and the second in an expected trilogy that began with 2022’s ‘Renaissance’.The second track on the album is a cover of the 1968 Beatles song, which she has renamed ‘Blackbiird’. Given the album’s embrace of country influences – including a cover of Dolly Parton’s ‘Jolene’ and appearances from Willie Nelson and Linda Martell – and its themes concerning race in American music history, the song has been chosen pointedly.Listen to ‘Blackbiird’ here:Paul McCartney wrote ‘Blackbird’ during the civil rights struggle of the 1960s, just weeks after the assassination of Dr Martin Luther King Jr.

Martin Scorsese’s Jesus Film Collaborator Father Spadaro Reveals Early Draft of Script in New Book – Read an Excerpt (EXCLUSIVE)

Nick Vivarelli International Correspondent Last May, after “Killers of the Flower Moon” premiered at Cannes Film Festival, Martin Scorsese traveled to Rome with his wife, Helen Morris, to attend a conference titled “The Global Aesthetics of the Catholic Imagination.” There, the director announced that he had responded to an appeal by Pope Francis to artists “in the only way I know how: by imagining and writing a screenplay for a film about Jesus.” The conference was organized by Jesuit publication “La Civiltà Cattolica.” It took place after the journal’s editor, Father Antonio Spadaro, held a series of one-on-one conversations with Scorsese that have just been published in Italy in book titled “Dialoghi sulla fede” (“Dialogues on Faith”). The final chapter of this book is titled, as translated from Italian, “Screenplay for a Possible Film on Jesus” by Scorsese.

Lady Gaga calls out ‘hatred’ over National Women’s Day post with trans influencer Dylan Mulvaney

Dylan Mulvaney “appalling.”On Friday, Mulvaney, a transgender woman, posted an Instagram photo with Gaga to celebrate International Women’s Day, which quickly faced blowback for a biological male claiming to honor women.Gaga remarked on the issue Monday, specifically calling out the media’s framing with the use of the word “backlash.”“It’s appalling to me that a post about National Women’s Day by Dylan Mulvaney and me would be met with such vitriol and hatred. When I see a newspaper reporting on hatred but calling it ‘backlash’ I feel it is important to clarify that hatred is hatred, and this kind of hatred is violence.

Lady Gaga slams transphobic abuse directed at Dylan Mulvaney: “This is not backlash. This is hatred”

Lady Gaga has hit back at transphobic comments aimed at Dylan Mulvaney, saying that they represent “hatred”.The pop icon came to Mulvaney’s defence last night (March 11), following the actress and influencer being at the centre of online abuse in recent days.On Friday (March 8), Mulvaney shared photos of herself and the singer together as part of a photoshoot for Haus Labs – Gaga’s brand of makeup – and celebrated International Women’s Day in the caption.A post shared by Dylan Mulvaney (@dylanmulvaney)Shortly after, the influencer went on to receive a vast number of hateful and offensive comments, both misgendering her and criticising her for celebrating IWD as a transgender woman. Now, Lady Gaga has taken to social media to hit back at those spreading hate towards the actress, and slammed those posting the comments as spreading “hatred”.“It’s appalling to me that a post about National Women’s Day by Dylan Mulvaney and me would be met with such vitriol and hatred,” she wrote, sharing an image of them. “But it is not surprising given the immense work that it’s obvious we still have to do as a society to make room for transgender lives to be cherished and upheld by all of us.”“I feel very protective in this moment, not only of Dylan, but of the trans community who continues to lead the way with their endless grace and inspiration in the face of constant degradation, intolerance, and physical, verbal, and mental violence,” she added.

The 2024 Oscars were a giant snooze fest — again

snooze-o-rama Oscars, “Oppenheimer” deservedly took home seven trophies: best picture, director (Christopher Nolan), actor (Cillian Murphy), supporting actor (Robert Downey Jr.), cinematography, score and editing. It wasn’t a brutal beatdown. “Poor Things,” starring Emma Stone, snapped three technical awards away from it (as well as a Best Actress honor for Stone), and Cord Jefferson’s “American Fiction” deprived the atom bomb movie of Best Adapted Screenplay.
