Kendrick Sampson: Why I’m Protesting to Defund Police

District Attorneys across the country have announced they’re declining to prosecute those who were arrested while protesting in the wake of George Floyd‘s tragic killing. Los Angeles County District Attorney Jackie Lacey announced on June 8 that she will not file charges against any protester for a curfew violation or failing to disperse.

The model starred in an infamous 2017 Super Bowl Pepsi commercial — which was later revoked — in which she leaves a photoshoot to take part in a protest, ultimately offering a police officer a Pepsi as a peace offering. The ad was widely criticized for its tone-deaf message and gross oversimplification of activism.

What started as a routine, if not urgent, press conference amid protests marred by unrest across Los Angeles has led to a social media outcry and calls for L.A. Police Chief Michael Moore to be fired.

While the protests in Los Angeles escalated to violence and vandalism over the weekend, murals honoring Kobe Bryant and his late daughter, Gianna, have largely remained untouched. As Vanessa Bryant shared on social media on Monday, even the one mural that was threatened by fire was saved from damage.

Paris Jackson was caught up in the violent protests in Los Angeles on Saturday, which prompted city Mayor Eric Garcetti to call for an overnight curfew in an effort to keep people off the streets.

Ariana Grande is among the celebs taking part in Black Lives Matter protests as outcry following the tragic death of George Floyd sweeps the nation. The 26-year-old stepped out in Los Angeles on May 30, wearing a white protective face mask, and carried a ‘Black Lives Matter’ sign. One Twitter follower, who posted a photo of the “7 Rings” singer at the march, commended Ari for standing in solidarity.

"Insecure" actor Kendrick Sampson has been injured while protesting. The actor is among the thousands of individuals around the nation that have taken to the streets to protest police brutality.

Mayor Eric Garcetti extended a curfew to all of Los Angeles amid protests over the death of George Floyd. The curfew requires those within the city of Los Angeles to stay indoors beginning 8 p.m.
