“There were good and bad days,” she shared with the outlet about her time co-hosting with Regis. “I don’t want to feel like I’m slamming anyone or that I’m being disrespectful. But I also want people to know it was not a cakewalk. It took years to earn my place there and earn things that are routinely given to the men I worked with. Including an office and a place to put my computer.”
Kelly recalled that their relationship behind the scenes on the show was a bit strained.
“I felt horrible,” she said, remembering one moment about a snide comment from Regis about her bringing a hair and makeup team with her. “He was probably trying to be funny, but at the same time it felt like a pile-on.”
Kelly adds, “I understand that probably he didn’t want a co-host, but the network wanted me to be the co-host and I didn’t think I should pass up that opportunity. I don’t think it was fair to him. But it was also not fair to me.”
Despite this though, Kelly does treasure the friendly moments they did share.
“Off camera and outside of that building, it was a different thing,” she shares. “The handful of times we spent together, I so enjoyed. We went to the same resort once on vacation and he came to a dinner I hosted—one of the favorite nights of my life. I never

Kelly Ripa says the reason she did not have a great relationship with the late Regis Philbin could have been due to their age gap. Ripa wrote about her working relationship with Philbin in her book, "Live Wire: Long-Winded Short Stories." The television actress wrote that she was not given the same benefits as the men she was surrounded by, and told People, "there were good days and bad days… it was not a cakewalk." Ripa hosted the show alongside Philbin from 2001 until he retired in 2011.
Did Kelly Ripa strike gold when Ryan Seacrest signed on to co-host "Live! with Kelly and Ryan" in 2017? Ripa sparked backlash recently for bashing the late "Live!" patriarch Regis Philbin in her first memoir, claiming the legendary broadcaster made her life incredibly difficult behind scenes. She added insult to injury by admitting their communication was almost entirely nonexistent when he retired in 2011.

The former "All My Children" star wrote that she was not given the same benefits as the men she was surrounded by, and claimed she had to "earn" her place at the television show. Ripa hosted the show alongside Philbin from 2001 until he retired in 2011.
Kelly Ripa and Regis Philbin worked together for nearly a decade as hosts of "Live! with Regis and Kelly," and the daytime television talk show host didn't mince words while jotting down a few memories of her tumultuous relationship with the legendary broadcaster in her first memoir, "Live Wire: Long-Winded Short Stories." Ripa's written recollection of their time together on-and-off camera has been met with criticism from fans and foes, including former "Live!" host Kathie Lee Gifford, who admitted she won't be reading the essays, possibly as a subtle homage to her "great friend." In Ripa's new book, she wrote about having trouble working with Philbin, how she was not allowed to use her own hair and makeup team, and didn't receive a wardrobe budget. The former "All My Children" star also shared that her name "had to be smaller than Regis's name on the "Live!" title card and branding. She noted that receiving the offer to host the popular live show came with a warning, "They want to make sure you know who your boss is." Ripa went on to explain that after Philbin retired in 2011, they never had a relationship outside the studio and only socialized on rare occasions. Kelly Ripa received criticism from every angle following the release of her first memoir, "Live Wire: Long-Winded Short Stories," including former "Live!" co-host Kathie Lee Gifford who admitted she wouldn't be reading the book after seeing Regis Philbin's name being bashed. While Gifford stood firm in support of the late broadcasting legend and called Philbin a "great friend" during an exclusive interview with Fox News Digital, she also noted that Ripa can "say whatever she wants" and that she is a "big believer in freedom of expression." "I don't believe we're supposed to cancel anybody," she noted. Dave Quast, brand expert and senior vice president of Red Banyan crisis communications, agreed that Ripa "has every right" to detail her own story on paper, despite any adversity she may or may not receive for the experiences she endured.
Kathie Lee Gifford is choosing not to read Kelly Ripa’s new autobiographical book Live Wire: Long-Winded Short Stories, which includes a chapter on their former mutual co-host Regis Philbin.
