Kate Middleton was left in "floods of tears" following a tense phone call with Prince William, according to reports. The couple, who were not yet married at the time, had to spend some holidays apart due to royal tradition.
On one occasion, William cancelled their plans at the last minute, leaving Kate distraught and fearing for their relationship. In her 2011 book, 'The Making of a Royal Romance', royal author Katie Nicholl claimed that William had initially promised to join Kate for Christmas 2006, but decided to stay with his own family at the last moment.
In the book, Nicholl wrote: "William had been having second thoughts and sat down with his father and his grandmother to have a frank discussion about his future with Kate. Both advised him not to hurry into anything."
A few weeks later in 2007, the couple briefly split, which reportedly disappointed the late Queen. However, the break was short-lived, and William and Kate were soon seen kissing at an army party in Bovington, Dorset.
By July 2007, Kate and her brother James were spotted at the Concert for Diana, marking 10 years since the death of William's mother, Princess Diana, reports the Mirror.
Their romance was soon confirmed to be back on track, with Kate moving into William's Clarence House flat. Here, he would return from military duties for cosy weekends together - and as they say, the rest is history.
