Joe Otterson TV Reporter A limited series about the murder of JonBenét Ramsey is currently in development at MTV Entertainment Studios and 101 Studios, Variety has learned. The official logline for the project states that it “details the mysterious death and the surrounding media frenzy in the murder of JonBenét Ramsey, a case that captivated an entire nation and left us with more questions than answers.” Richard LaGravenese is attached to serve as executive producer and showrunner on the project.
Harrison Query and Tommy Wallach sold the project to MTVES and 101 and are also executive producers. LaGravenese has mostly worked in film during his career.
He has worked on the screenplays for films such as “Unbroken,” “Water for Elephants,” “Freedom Writers,” and “The Horse Whisperer.” He also directed “Freedom Writers,” as well as films like “PS I Love You” and “Beautiful Creatures,” with LaGravenese also having written the latter two as well. He is repped by CAA, LBI Entertainment, and Schreck Rose.
Ramsey was just six years old when she was murdered, with her body discovered in the basement of her family home in Colorado hours after her parents reported her missing. There have been numerous theories as to who killed her, including that it was a family member or someone who broke into the house, but the case is still officially open.
The case was the subject of intense media attention at the time and continues to be even over 25 years later. Several documentaries and news specials have been made about the case to date.

Season 1, which premiered in April 2023, was based on Laura Dave’s novel of the same name. Dave has newly set a sequel novel for publication in 2025, which will serve as the basis for Season 2.

Speculation had mounted over whether “One Day,” set in the U.K., would vie for the International Emmys, especially considering other Netflix shows like “Sex Education” have competed there and found success. Yet, Netflix and the team behind the show have opted to place it in the intensely competitive limited or anthology series categories, alongside streaming counterparts “Griselda,” starring Sofia Vergara and “Ripley,” featuring Andrew Scott.

Joe Otterson TV Reporter Netflix has greenlit the limited series “Black Rabbit” starring Jason Bateman and Jude Law. The series was originally announced as being in development at the streamer back in October 2022. With the greenlight announcement, it is also confirmed that Cleopatra Coleman (“Rebel Moon – Part One: A Child of Fire”), Amaka Okafor (“Bodies,” “The Responder”), Ṣọpẹ́ Dìrísù (“Gangs of London,” “Slow Horses”), and Dagmara Dominczyk (“Succession,” “The Lost Daughter”) will all star in the series alongside Bateman and Law.
We’re getting the first look at André Holland as Black Panther leader Huey P. Newton in Apple’s upcoming limited series The Big Cigar (See photo above). Joe Otterson TV Reporter Margaret Qualley has been cast as Amanda Knox in an untitled limited series that has been ordered at Hulu, Variety has learned. Hulu has ordered eight one-hour episodes. The official description states that the show is “based on the true story of how Knox was wrongfully convicted for the murder of her roommate Meredith Kercher and her 16-year odyssey to set herself free.” KJ Steinberg (“This Is Us,” “Mistresses,” “Gossip Girl”) serves as writer and executive producer on the series.
EXCLUSIVE: MGM+ has given the green light to Nine Bodies in a Mexican Morgue. Eric McCormack (Will & Grace, Perception) is the first actor cast in the mystery thriller, playing one of the leads in the six-part ensemble limited series written, created and executive produced by Anthony Horowitz (Magpie Murders) and produced by Eleventh Hour Films, a Sony Pictures Television-backed company.
Andrew Scott stars as the infamous Tom Ripley in Netflix’s new limited series “Ripley,” which premieres on April 4. Based on Patricia Highsmith’s bestselling novels, the series begins when a wealthy man hires Ripley to travel to Italy and convince his vagabond son to return home. In accepting the job, this marks “the first step into a complex life of deceit, fraud and murder,” per the release.
Author Patricia Highsmith’s “The Talented Mr. Ripley” and all the subsequent novels are obviously huge in the literary canon of crime and psychological thrillers.
