Johnny Depp opened the festival as a star of Maiwenn’s royal drama “Jeanne du Barry,” while his daughter, Lily-Rose Depp, headlined HBO’s “The Idol,” which delivered Cannes its most controversial world premiere thanks to its many scenes of graphic sex and nudity. “I’m super happy for him. I’m super excited,” Lily-Rose told ET Canada while at Cannes, where Johnny Depp choked up during a seven-minute standing ovation after the “Jeanne du Barry” world premiere. “And it’s so awesome that we get to do projects that we’re super proud of.” The opening night premiere for “Jeanne du Barry” marked a comeback for Johnny Depp on the international film stage following his 2022 trial against ex-wife Amber Heard. Although the jury sided in Depp’s favor, the actor remains sidelined by Hollywood as a result of abuse allegations that surfaced during the trial. A U.S. distributor has yet to pick up “Jeanne du Barry” for an American release.

Since then, he’s been persona non grata in major Hollywood productions, which included being fired from the “Fantastic Beasts” franchise.

The fifth Harrison Ford-starring Indy flick doesn’t open theatrically until the week of June 30, but Cannes audiences got the first look. “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull” debuted at the 2008 Cannes Festival, however, that was days away from its Memorial Day weekend launch.

The actor stars in historical drama Jeanne Du Barry as King Louis XV, alongside director Maiwenn, which opened the world-famous event on the French Riviera. It comes a year after he won a court case against his ex-wife Amber Heard, who wrote an op-ed claiming Depp was an abuser.

Johnny Depp.  The embattled actor, who hasn’t appeared in public since his protracted 2022 legal battle with ex-girlfriend Amber Heard, received an ecstatic seven-minute standing ovation on Tuesday night at the premiere of Cannes Film Festival’s opening night film “Jeanne Du Barry.” Depp held back tears as the crowd in the South of France erupted in prolonged applause for his performance as the King Louis XV. He waved to the audience in the balcony and seemed taken aback by the response. The film’s director and star Maiwenn also broke out into tears as she briefly took the mic. “I want to share this moment with my lover, with my producer, with Le Pacte,” she said. “It was a production that was difficult to finance … and I want to share this moment with all my team across the theater.”

The actor was embraced with a movie star’s welcome as he returned to Cannes Film Festival on Tuesday for the premiere of “Jeanne du Barry.” The period drama, from director Maïwenn, marks the actor’s first leading role in three years, following ongoing legal battles with ex-wife Amber Heard. French fans began gathering as early as 10 a.m. along the Croisette in the hopes of scoring an autograph and snagging a selfie with Depp, who made his way into the theater just after 7 p.m. Enthusiastic spectators were holding up posters saying “Viva Johnny” and “We Love Johnny” while others chanted  “Johnny, Johnny, Johnny” and held out the actor’s Dior ads for a signature. Depp, sporting a pony tail and purple sunglasses, took his time to pose for selfies and acknowledge the admirers who came to see him. By the time he got to his seat inside the theater, the adoration continued as he was greeted with a rapturous standing ovation.
