Addie Morfoot Contributor John Legend is no stranger to documentaries. Last month, he and his Get Lifted Films’ co-founders Mike Jackson and Ty Stiklorius announced that they would serve as executive producers on Oscar-nominated Waad Al-Kateab’s latest docu “We Dare to Dream.” This month, Legend is behind HBO Documentary Films’ “Stand Up & Shout: Songs From a Philly High School.” About an annual music program in the city’s Hill-Freedman World Academy, the 54-minute docu features 10th-grade students learning to write, compose, produce, and perform original songs. Together with local musicians, the students pitch concepts, work out arrangements, and eventually create an album that captures the challenges they are living through and the joy music brings to their respective lives.
Director Amy Schatz spent one school year following a group of students from the program as they came up with song ideas, went through the recording process, and release their collaborative album. Legend, Jackson and Stiklorius, who have a first-look feature documentary deal with HBO, joined the project as executive producers after Schatz began filming. “I really believe in the importance of music and education and the importance of arts and education,” says Legend.
“Often, those programs are the first things to get cut when people make prioritization decisions about where money can go in the school district. So we wanted this film to be a real statement about the value of these types of programs in schools. Just seeing the kids collaborate with each other, work on a project together, and get so excited to tell their own stories was exciting.

Daryl Hall’s lawsuit against music partner John Oates may have shocked fans, but the pair have made it clear through the years that they aren’t best friends — to put it mildly.“John and I are brothers, but we are not creative brothers,” Hall declared during an interview on the “Club Random with Bill Maher” podcast in December 2022.“We are business partners. We made records called Hall & Oates together, but we’ve always been very separate, and that’s a really important thing for me,” he added. The musician also implied that he did most of the work, noting that their 1980 song “Kiss on My List” doesn’t list Oates as a songwriter.Earlier this month, Hall and his organization, the Daryl Hall Revocable Trust, filed a lawsuit against Oates and Oates’ trust, the John W.
were the beloved ’70s pop duo Hall & Oates, but on Thursday, a judge granted Hall, 77, a temporary restraining order against Oates, 75, shocking fans around the world in what seems to be the beginning of a tense legal battle. Hall also filed a lawsuit against Oates in Nashville on Wednesday, and while the legal documents are sealed, the documents are labeled as relating to a “contract/debt” suit. Just three years ago, The Post’s Chuck Arnold spoke with the pair — separately, that is — ahead of their sold-out Madison Square Garden show in a conversation in which Hall claimed the “Maneater” songsters “never fight.” “Is there any song that you two fought over?” Arnold asked each member.
Daryl Hall, one half of the most successful pop duo in U.S. chart history, Hall & Oates, is suing John Oates and has been granted a restraining order against his longtime bandmate.

Saturday Night Live poked fun at Imagine Dragons at the weekend with a parody band that had an uncanny resemblance to them.In the show’s ‘Weekend Update’ segment, host Colin Jost introduced the show’s “back-up musical guests” in the form of Remember Lizards – not to be confused with Imagine Dragons apparently – played by Andrew Dismukes and James Austin Johnson. The parody band acknowledged their similarity with the band and said their music was “a similar genre”, describing it as “uplifting kid friendly hip hop slash arena rock with a pump up edge.”However, in a comedic move to separate themselves from the real Imagine Dragons, they clarified that the Dan Reynolds-fronted band is “Christian-curious,” while Remember Lizards is “decidedly Christian.”Remember Lizards then performed snippets of a parody song, ‘Chemical (Poison)’ which sounded notably like Imagine Dragons’ own hit ‘Believer’.
