Joe Wicks had an emotional moment this morning as he discussed his childhood. The fitness guru broke down in tears as he recalled his parents’ addiction and mental health issues during his younger years. As he remembered a visit to a primary school in Harlem, New York, he remembered a student he met there. Joe said he could remember the “sadness” in his eyes, and said he had the “hardest home life you can possibly imagine”.
Speaking to the Express, Joe said he could connect with the child on a deep level, saying that during his childhood, he was constantly aware of being perceived as the “naughty” child. He explained that in school, he would behave in a way that was “distracted and disruptive”. His coping mechanism, he added, was sport - which allowed him to jump from game to game and distract himself.

His mum suffered with mental health issues and obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) while his dad struggled with addiction. He said: "Like, 'Look at me', because no one was asking what was going on and no one knows what has happened, why was I the naughty kid? "Why was I pulled out of class and put in isolation? No one said, 'What is going on? What's happening at home?' Because people think you have a normal home life." When he met the child in Harlem, it reminded him of his own life. In tears, he said: "There are all these kids with smiles, and some are withdrawn, and I went to a school in Harlem, New York and same thing, really deprived area, and they had some of the toughest home lives.
