She was also the first Black woman to be admitted to the International Photographers of Motion Picture & Television Union in the 1970s. Born in Louisiana in 1947, Maple worked as the head of a bacteriology and serology lab before shifting to journalism, writing for the New York Courier.
After becoming the first Black woman to be admitted to the New York camera operators union, Maple worked for several years as a news camerawoman before independently releasing “Will.” The film follows a girls’ basketball coach who struggles with a heroin addiction. Maple would go on to direct the film “Twice as Nice,” another independent work that tells the story of twin female basketball players. Maple is survived by her husband, Leroy Patton, along with her daughter Audrey Snipes, grandson Nigel Snipes, five sisters, two adopted daughters and an extensive group of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Di Stefano’s high-profile project, which is titled “Karski,” is being developed by New York City-based production company Phiphen Pictures, the indie founded by Molly Conners most recently behind Netflix’s “Like Father” and “It’s Bruno!,” the director said. Italy’s expanding Indiana Production, which shepherded “Amore,” is also on board.

Holland said on “Live With Kelly and Mark” that bad reviews had nothing to do with his decision to break from acting. The choice was made when “The Crowded Room” wrapped filming last year, meaning Holland is already months into his Hollywood hiatus. “It’s so funny. Obviously, ‘The Crowded Room’ came out. We didn’t have very favorable reviews,” Holland said. “So the press story was that I have taken this year off because of the reviews. But I’m eight months into my year off. Maple’s family released a statement confirming her death via the Black Film Center & Archive. Maple was recognized as the first Black woman to be admitted into the International Photographers of Motion Picture & Television Union in the ‘70s. Her career as a trailblazing cinematographer led her move into directing, making the 1981 independent feature film “Will.” Maple was said to be the first Black woman to direct an independent feature-length film in a post-civil rights America.
McKinley Franklin editor Marlene Clark, an actor who appeared on “Sanford and Son,” the horror movie “Ganja & Hess” and several other films of the ’60s and ’70s, died on May 18. She was 85. Clark starred in several films ahead of landing her breakout role as Lamont Lawson’s (played by Demond Wilson) wife Janet in “Sanford and Son.” She later starred in the 1973 horror movie “Ganja & Hess” alongside Duane Jones. Clark was born and raised in Harlem, N.Y., and spent time in West Virginia during her summers. She returned to New York after attending Morristown Jr. College in Tennessee and enrolled in City College. While at school, Clark participated in school plays, igniting her interest in the acting world.
