cancer according to Reuters. An employee at Miyake’s office told AFP that his funeral has already taken place with ‘only relatives participating’ in accordance with his wishes. Miyake rose to prominence in the 1980s thanks to his simplistic pleated style of clothing.
The designer was born in Hiroshima in 1938 and launched his fashion career in 1970 when he opened the Miyake Design Studio in Tokyo before later cutting the ribbon on his first boutique in Paris. The next decade saw him create iconic pieces using metal wire, plastic and artisanal Japanese paper. Under his main Issey Miyake fashion umbrella, the designer’s lines included bags, watches and fragrances for both men and women.
However, he retired in 1997 to focus on research. Miyake was just seven years old when the US dropped an atomic bomb on the city in August 1945 while he was in a classroom, leading to the end of World War II. His mother died of radiation exposure three years later.
However, he once said he wanted to be known as more than the designer who survived the bombing, while also revealing the trauma it left him with. ‘When I close my eyes, I still see things no one should ever experience,’ Miyake once wrote. ‘I have tried, albeit unsuccessfully, to put them behind me, preferring to think of things that can be created, not destroyed, and that bring beauty and joy.
I gravitated toward the field of clothing design, partly because it is a creative format that is modern and optimistic. ’ Miyake opened up about his experience in an op-ed for The New York Times in 2016 in hopes of persuading then-US President Barack Obama to visit Hiroshima.
