Jacket potatoes are one of the most popular and reliable lunch dishes out there. They are versatile, tasty and simple to cook, making them great for fuss-free meals.
Whether you like to top them with tuna, baked beans, cheese or just butter, there's no doubt that jacket potatoes are easy to prepare - all you need to do is put them in the oven.
However, this can take an hour or even longer, which isn't always ideal when you're hungry. So instead of using just the oven, why not try using the microwave as well, in order to get the job done quicker?
The Express reports that an expert has shared a simple two-step tutorial to slash the cooking time of your jacket potato without compromising that golden, crispy skin.
Darren Watts, showroom development and design director at Wren Kitchens said: “Using just the oven to cook a jacket potato can take around 30-40 minutes, however, there is a trick to reduce the cooking time but still have a crispy finish.
"Preheat the oven to 200C and using a fork, prick the potato all over. This allows steam to escape during cooking and prevents them from bursting.
"Microwave it for five minutes and remove before rinsing the potato again and rubbing the skin with a little olive oil or melted butter. This step helps the skin crisp up and be full of flavour. Finally, bake in the oven for 10-15 minutes.”
Your potato will be very hot when you take it out of the oven so be sure to handle it with caution. Once it's ready, you can enjoy it with a topping or filling of your choice.
Some popular ones include tuna mayo, beans, cheese, butter, sour cream and gravy.
