This Morning's Holly Willoughby and Phillp Scofield say they went to see the Queen laying in state for everyone who "couldn't go".
The presenters were accused of using a VIP lane on Friday after being spotted on the BBC's live feed, with many thinking they had just filed past Her Majesty in Westminster Hall.
They were targeted with abuse on social media across the weekend, with calls for them to be sacked, after the likes of David Beckham and Good Morning Britain's Susanna Reid were spotted waiting in queues of up to 13 hours.
During today's episode of This Morning, they opened the show with a segment of video clips as they marked the period of mourning following the Queen's passing on September 8. They referenced the day the news broke, as well as Meghan Markle and Prince Harry reuniting with Prince William and his wife Kate.
The pair spoke over a string of footage of the Queen lying in state where they said, as journalists, they went to "show all the people who were unable to attend Westminster Hall". They said they never took anyone else's place and joined other accredited journalists.
"We were given official permission to access the hall, it was strictly for reporting on the event for millions of people in the UK who haven't been able to visit Westminster in person," Holly said in a voice over.
She added: "The rules were, that we would be quickly escorted around the edges to a platform at the back. Things between This Morning and Holly Willoughby are said to be “tense” as she continues to find herself at the centre of a “queue jumping” row alongside fellow presenter Philip Schofield. While the pair, who have presented the popular daytime show together since 2009, are known for their bubbly personalities and infectious laughs, fans have claimed that the show has been a lot more subdued following accusations of queue-jumping at the late Queen’s lying-in-state As a result of the accusations, 41 year old Holly is said to have been left “angry” by the situation. Speaking to The Sun, a source said: “She feels like she has been left out to dry by ITV in some aspects and is understandably very angry.
Vanessa Feltz was reduced to tears on her TalkTV show as she discussed and reflected on the Queen being laid to rest after her state funeral on Monday. Queen Elizabeth II died 'peacefully' on September 8 at Balmoral, aged 96.
A petition to axe Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield from This Morning after they were accused of "jumping the queue" to see the Queen Lying-in-State has reached over 9,000 signatures. Holly, 41, and Phillip, 60, could be seen lining up in Westminster Hall to pay their respects to the late monarch on Friday, however, their 'media passes' meant that they were fast-tracked ahead of thousands of others who had queued for up to 24 hours. The controversy has generated a huge backlash, especially after other celebrities such as David Beckham and GMB's Susanna Reid queued for over seven hours amongst members of the public.
