U2 kicked off their residency at the MSG Sphere in Las Vegas by dedicating one of their tracks to drummer Larry Mullen Jr, who is not taking part in the shows due to various injuries. The Irish rock icons launched their long-awaited residency at the new MSG Sphere in Nevada last week, and used the opening show to pay tribute to the absent member.Bono, The Edge, Adam Clayton and stand-in drummer Bram Van Den Berg all made a nod towards Mullen Jr during the set, dedicating their 1988 track ‘All I Want Is You’ to him. The drummer is not taking part in their 25-show residency at the £2.3billion venue due to injuries sustained to his elbows, knees and neck.He previously confirmed that the injuries are all drumming-related, and said that he would “like to take some time… to get myself healed”, rather than persevere with the Las Vegas shows.

The opening night of the new Sphere Las Vegas event space was a star-studded affair!
It looked like a typical U2 outdoor concert: Two helicopters zoomed through the starlit sky before producing spotlights over a Las Vegas desert and frontman Bono, who kneeled to the ground while singing the band’s 2004 hit “Vertigo”.
Chris Willman Senior Music Writer and Chief Music Critic Spectacle is underrated. This is pretty much the antithesis of any accepted, traditional rock ‘n’ roll orthodoxy. It is also the natural human reaction to just about any or all of “U2:UV Live at Sphere Las Vegas,” the greatest-show-on-earth that opened Friday night in an enormous dome just off the Strip.
The Sphere didn’t fall flat on opening night. The Las Vegas venue debuted Friday night with U2 as its resident artist, and drew foaming at the mouth raves from reviewers.
U2 kicked off their Las Vegas residency at the new MSG Sphere venue last night (September 29) – see clips from the show and the full setlist below. The Irish rock band’s residency is centred on a full play-through of their seventh album, ‘Achtung Baby’ (1991) but, as confirmed by reports, the setlist will be broken up by a secret segment focusing on a different U2 album.Variety reports that singer Bono revealed to the crowd the they plan to focus on a different album (or possibly other people’s albums, he added, teasingly), however, he didn’t clarify whether that would mean a setlist switch-up on each of the residency’s 25 shows.Last night U2 played the first eight songs of ‘Achtung Baby’ before breaking into a four-song secret segment of their a hybrid live/studio album ‘Rattle And Hum’.The band’s debut residency gig, which opened on the same day that they released their first new song in two years, ‘Atomic City’, was attended by a host of famous faces including Paul McCartney and Snoop Dogg. NME writer Damian Jones also confirmed that Dr Dre and Flavor Flav were at the concert.Ahead of performing ‘Angel Of Harlem’ from ‘Rattle And Hum’, Bono said: “The macca [McCartney] is in our prescience.
