Host Lenny Kravitz kicked off the festivities at Los Angeles’ Dolby Theatre with a somber note: paying respect to the victims of Monday’s shooting at a private Christian elementary school in Tennessee. “Before we get started, I want to take a moment to send some of that healing to the Nashville community,” said Kravitz. “Our hearts are heavy and we are with you. America we must do better and we will do better.”

Paul Sorvino's Daughter Mira and Wife Dee Dee Slam 2023 Oscars for Leaving Him Out of 'In Memoriam' Segment

2023 Oscars «In Memoriam» segment. While this year's tribute to those stars we've lost was moving and emotional — featuring a tearful introduction from John Travolta and a powerful performance of «Calling All Angels» by Lenny Kravitz — glaring omission of some big-name stars shook up some viewers at home.Anne Heche — who died following a fiery car crash in August at the age of 53 — was not a part of the segment, despite her many film roles. Also absent from the televised tribute was longtime film veteran Tom Sizemore — who died on March 3 at age 61, two weeks after suffering a brain aneurysm that left him hospitalized. One of the most surprising omissions was that of Charlbi Dean, who died on Aug. 22 at age 32, given that dean has a prominent role in, which was nominated for three Oscars at this year's ceremony.Other stars who were notably missing from the broadcast's tribute segment included screen veteran Paul Sorvino, star Fred Ward, comedian Gilbert Gottfried, beloved comic actor Leslie Jordan, actress Cindy Williams, longtime journalist Barbara Walters and Lisa Marie Presley, who collaborated with director Baz Luhrmann on his Oscar-nominated biopic Elvis. In an effort to defend their choices, and honor all the stars who have died this past year, the show directed viewers to the longer In Memoriam tribute on their website, but many fans were confused and upset about the decisions that went into choosing who to honor during the show itself.Following the blaring omission of Sorvino, his widow, Dee Dee Sorvino, released a statement to ET, expressing her disappointment with the Academy.«Paul Sorvino was one of the greatest actors in cinematic history in Hollywood.

Oscars 2023 criticised over key omissions from In Memoriam segment

Oscars for omitting certain individuals from the In Memoriam segment of the broadcast.During the ceremony at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles on Sunday (March 12), John Travolta introduced the In Memoriam section to remember those from the film industry who have died over the past year.As Lenny Kravitz performed ‘Calling All Angels’, a black-and-white slideshow remembered late stars such as Olivia Newton-John, Ray Liotta, Jean-Luc Godard, James Caan and others. At the end of the segment, a QR code was shown where viewers could find more of those lost over the past year on the Academy’s website. The absence of certain individuals from the televised broadcast, however, has sparked some criticism among viewers – especially Charlbi Dean, who played a lead role in Best Picture nominee Triangle Of Sadness.“She was the lead in a best picture this year and you don’t add her to the in memoriam?!?! RIP Charlbi Dean,” one viewer wrote.Others not included in the broadcast include Leslie Jordan, Anne Heche, Tom Sizemore and Paul Sorvino.

John Travolta Gets Choked Up Introducing Emotional 2023 Oscars 'In Memoriam' Tribute Featuring Lenny Kravitz

2023 Oscars took time to share some love and respect for all of the beloved entertainment icons who died over the last year during the show's gala ceremony.John Travolta took to the stage at the iconic Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles on Sunday, to introduce the emotional In Memoriam segment, featuring a performance from Lenny Kravitz.«In this industry, we have the rare luxury of getting to do what we love for a living, and sometimes getting to do it with people that we come to love,» shared Travolta. «And since tonight is a celebration of the work and the accomplishments of our community in this past year, it is only fitting then that we celebrate those we've lost, who dedicated their lives to their craft, both in front of and behind the camera.»«Through their immeasurable contributions, each of them left an individual and indelible mark that shared and informed us. They've touched our hearts, they've made us smile, and became dear friends,» he continued, as his voice cracked and tears welled up in his eyes, «who we will always remain hopelessly devoted to.»Travolta's introduction paid special tribute to Olivia-Newton John, who sang «Hopelessly Devoted to You» in their 1978 musical, Travolta then introduced Lenny Kravitz, who sat at a piano and performed a moving rendition of his song, «Calling All Angels.»This year's In Memoriam honored a multitude of actors, actresses, filmmakers and entertainers who had won Oscars or were nominated during their illustrious careers, including three-time Oscar winning singer-songwriter/composer Burt Bacharach — who died on Feb. 8, 2023, at the age of 94 — as well as Oscar-winning singer Irene Cara, who died on Nov.
