‘Baby Reindeer’ creator says he “never saw” stalker Martha as “a villain”

Baby Reindeer creator Richard Gadd has opened up further about his creative process behind the hit Netflix series, and how he viewed his real-life stalker.Earlier this week he appeared alongside co-stars Jessica Gunning and Nava Mau at the Directors Guild of America to speak in a panel with the series’ director Weronika Tofilska and its editor Peter Oliver. The semi-autobiographical series, which was adapted from a one-man play, follows a struggling comedian named Donny (a fictionalised version of Gadd, who created and starred in the show) who is relentlessly stalked by an older woman named Martha (Gunning). With the guidance of his girlfriend, Teri (Mau), Donny attempts to understand and resolve his situation, but is in the process affected by traumatic events of his past. One of the show’s most talked about elements is the nuanced relationship between Donny and Martha, with the protagonist often feeling sorry for his stalker, and even developing some sort of attraction towards her.Gadd has admitted previously that he felt sorry for his real-life stalker, and elaborated on this during the panel.

‘Baby Reindeer’ Review: A Conventional Stalking Thriller Transforms Into A Devastating & Complex Confessional About Abuse & Trauma

“Baby Reindeer” mania has already swept the U.K., and the word-of-mouth export continues to make waves across the U.S., hence our belated review about an incredibly devastating and twisting series that is so much more than you initially expected. There’s a natural tendency in most savvy viewers to predict how events might unfold in any film or televised event. For years, Netflix established itself as a contender in the truth-is-stranger-than-fiction sweepstakes with the murder-for-hire animal park drama (“Tiger King”) or plunges into the darkest realms of internet video (“Don’t F**k with Cats: Hunting an Internet Killer”).

Why does Martha misspell messages in ‘Baby Reindeer’?

Netflix’s runaway hit series Baby Reindeer has been one of the most talked-about shows of 2024, but why are Martha’s email messages in the show spelt so poorly?Created by and starring Richard Gadd, the show brings his real-life experience of being stalked and sexually abused to screens, having previously told the story on stage in his acclaimed one-man show.Gadd plays a fictionalised version of himself named Donny who is obsessively stalked by a woman named Martha (Jessica Gunning) after he befriends her in a pub.As their unusual relationship begins to develop, we see some of the litany of emails sent from Martha to Donny printed on the screen, invariably with very poor spelling.Reflecting the real-life circumstances of the events in the show, the email correspondences we see on screen from Martha are taken verbatim from Gadd’s actual stalker. In total, the woman sent Gadd a total of 41,041 emails, over 350 hours of voicemail messages, 106 pages of letters and many social media messages. It is not known exactly why the real Martha’s messages were composed with such poor spelling and grammar, although it could be said that it reflects her psychological state at the time.Others have speculated that the messages could be the result of dyslexia or a series of manic episodes.
