Netflix to Win Big With Tax Incentive Changes in New Jersey and California

Gene Maddaus Senior Media Writer Netflix is poised to score big from two tax incentives that are moving through the state legislatures in California and New Jersey this week. In California, the legislature is set to approve a five-year extension of the state’s $330 million incentive for film and TV production. For the first time, the tax credit will be refundable — meaning that companies like Netflix, which does not have California tax liability, will be able to benefit. And in New Jersey, the legislature is moving forward on a significant expansion of a state incentive for film and TV infrastructure. That expansion is designed in part to help Netflix redevelop Fort Monmouth, a former military base on the Jersey Shore, as a production facility.

Editor’s note: Bryn Mathieu lives near one of the studios, where WGA picketing and honking occurs daily. In May, law enforcement in Burbank posted an electronic sign outside of Warner Bros warning drivers that excessive horn use violates 27001 of the California Vehicle Code. The law enforces “reasonably necessary” horn blowing to insure safe operation of other vehicles. Otherwise, “the horn shall not otherwise be used, except as a theft alarm system.”

But in the past, the actor has famously spoken a tad ill of Lucas’ creations, virally calling Han Solo a “relatively thin” character whom he wanted to see killed off, and reportedly convinced the filmmakers to do it in the Sequel Trilogy.

Arnold Schwarzenegger Says He’d ‘Absolutely’ Run for President in 2024 if He Could: ‘It’s a No Brainer…I See So Clearly How I Could Win’

Zack Sharf Digital News Director Arnold Schwarzenegger would throw his name into the race for U.S. president if he was eligible, the actor and former California governor told Chris Wallace on a recent episode of Max and CNN’s “Who’s Talking?” interview series. The action movie icon already has a history in U.S. politics, as he served as the 38th governor of California from 2003 to 2011. “The Constitution says that the President has to be a natural born US citizen. If not for that, would you have run for president?” Wallace asked Schwarzenegger. “Well, yes, of course,” Schwarzenegger responded. “I mean, I think the field was wide open in 2016. And I think the field is open right now. I mean, think about it right now. I mean, who is there? There is really not a person that can bring everyone together. Who is here today that people say okay, he’s not too old or he’s not too this or too that, or is that because it’s now a question about who do you vote against then who do you vote for?”

Netflix Poised to Benefit From Change in California Tax Credit

Gene Maddaus Senior Media Writer The California Legislature this week agreed to a significant change in the state’s film and TV tax credit, and one company in particular appears poised to benefit: Netflix. The state issues $330 million in tax credits every year to keep production jobs in California. The credits can be used to offset corporate income tax and sales tax. But some companies either have no California tax liability, or not enough to make full use of the credits. Gov. Gavin Newsom agreed this year to help those companies out by making the credit “refundable,” so that those companies can get cash back. The Legislature released details of a budget deal on Monday, which indicated that it had approved Newsom’s refundability proposal.
