Vincent Kompany stood, almost stock still, drinking it in. His Burnley side had just secured promotion to the Premier League. All around him there were celebrations, selfies and singing. The Clarets chief observed, watching his players and the club's supporters enjoy the moment.
For him, nothing has changed and everything has. Burnley remain, as Kompany has pointed out on several occasions this season, the 21st-best team in England. He wants to climb that ladder, he wants the Championship title, he wants further progress.
But next season they will dine at the top table, mixing it with some of the world's best. Kompany, who spent 11 glorious years at Manchester City, will return to the Etihad as a contemporary of his coaching mentor.
