The pair have been involved in a bitterly fought out legal battle over domestic abuse claims directed towards Johnny by Amber, which each side has disputed over in regards to falsities and truths of the matter.The defamation trial taking place in Virginia is going ahead as Johnny sues Amber for $50 million over her 2018 op-ed published in The Washington Post – revealing herself to be a victim of domestic abuse – to which Amber is countersuing for $100 million.

In the op-ed, the 35 year old referenced herself as a “public figure representing domestic abuse" before speaking about her experience with such violence and – although not mentioning names – Johnny complained defamation of character in response. "The op-ed's clear implication that Mr Depp is a domestic abuser is categorically and demonstrably false," Johnny’s lawyer wrote in the complaint.
"Her allegations are part of an elaborate hoax to generate positive publicity for Ms Heard and advance her career." Amber and Johnny dated after meeting on the set of The Rum Diary in 2012 and married in 2015, only to split 15 months later. Filing for divorce, Amber also put in a restraining order against ex Johnny, 58, and spoke of how he “violently” attacked her and threw a phone at her face with “extreme force” whilst appearing in court with a bruised cheek.
