The International Documentary Association is beginning 2024 with a new executive director, and now a new executive committee of the IDA board.
The nonprofit, which provides grants in support of documentary filmmakers, advocates for the field and mounts fall and spring screening series and the bi-annual Getting Real conference, announced the election of Ina Fichman and Michael Turner as board co-presidents. They succeed Grace Lee and Chris Perez, who remain on the board.
Fichman earned an Academy Award nomination last year for producing Fire of Love. She has also earned Emmy, BAFTA, and Cinema Eye Honors nominations for her work, and won awards from the Jerusalem Film Festival, the Gémeaux Awards in Montreal, the Latino Entertainment Journalists Association, among many others.
Turner oversees business and legal affairs for Netflix’s slate of documentary films. He previously served as SVP and head of business and legal affairs at Discovery’s production studio. He earned his J.D. from the Cardozo School of Law in New York.
The IDA board rounded out its new executive committee by electing Chris Albert as secretary and Maria Agui-Carter as treasurer.
Albert serves as EVP, global communications and talent relations for Disney Branded Television and National Geographic Content. “He is responsible for developing and executing global consumer and trade communications strategies for Disney Branded Television, Disney Original Documentary, National Geographic Content, and National Geographic Documentary Films,” his bio notes.
Agui-Carter is the founder of Iguana Films and a professor at Emerson College. Her recent credits include Rebel: Loreta Velazquez, Secret Soldier of the American Civil War, and the PBS series Scigirl, which
