How ‘Creed III’ Captured Michael B. Jordan’s Love of Anime in the Final Fight

Carolyn Hinds As Michael B. Jordan stepped back into the role of Adonis Creed for “Creed III,” he also stepped into the directing ring for the first time. Also returning for the latest installment is cinematographer Kramer Morgenthau, who was tasked with framing the film’s epic boxing matches. Together, Jordan and Morgenthau worked to create the franchise’s most visually unique chapter to date. Bookending the film are two brutal boxing matches that serve as pivotal moments in Adonis’s life and professional career — the first, Creed’s retirement fight in South Africa, and the last, his face-off against former childhood friend Damian “Dame” Anderson (Jonathan Majors) in Los Angeles. Those particular sequences are intended to show that there is more to the fights and the athletes than meets the eye. For Adonis, being in the ring gives him the opportunity to lay his demons to rest and find peace in his life.

Michael B. Jordan’s ‘Creed’-Verse Might Include Anime Film, A Live-Action TV Series & More

By now, you’ve heard that the boxing drama “Creed III” has been a massive hit—the number #1 movie at the box office this past weekend, already over $110 million worldwide—and that’s been a huge boon to actor Michael B. Jordan, who not only stars in the franchise but made his directorial debut with the third film in this franchise.

New Theatre Owners President Michael P. O’Leary on Challenges Facing the Movies and Why He Remains Optimistic

Rebecca Rubin Film and Media Reporter Michael P. O’Leary certainly has a tough act to follow. He’s taking over as president and CEO of the National Association of Theatre Owners from John Fithian, who has been a major force for two decades as the top lobbyist for the exhibition industry. And, he’s assuming the job at a trying time for the movie theater industry, which was battered by — and has yet to fully recover from — the pandemic. Attendance and ticket sales haven’t returned to pre-COVID levels and major theater chains, including the CineWorld-owned Regal have been forced to file for bankruptcy, while roughly 2,000 screens across the industry have shuttered. Exhibitors that stayed in business have suffered from a supply shortage.

Michael B. Jordan On Knockout Directing Debut ‘Creed III,’ Trading Blows With Jonathan Majors

EXCLUSIVE: As his directorial debut Creed III was cresting toward a $100 million global opening weekend and setting numerous records — top opening for the Creed franchise and biggest sports film opening ever and a knockout victory for MGM, new parent Amazon & United Artists Releasing as the company embraces the theatrical release, and Warner Bros (which launched the film overseas) — Michael B. Jordan sat down with me Sunday night as those numbers were piling higher. It was the first in person interview for us since I met him and Ryan Coogler at Cannes for the launch of Fruitvale Station. Trying to rebound from my own family tragedy months earlier, that film was cathartic for me because it was the first time I grieved the death of my father in Hurricane Sandy. I shared that with them, and spent a lot of time with both, and especially Jordan. He was just stepping into stardom and we talked about everything from navigating such a famous name to how much he was obliged to give of himself in interviews and in public. This was at a surreal moment when he was still a little uneasy walking down the Croisette and hearing a person or two calling out “Where’s Wallace,” the meme line about his young character from the series The Wire. I recall walking away from Coogler and Jordan hoping they continued to make strong followup creative choices because all the potential was there. Who knew it might happen so quickly for each of them?

Directed by Michael B. Jordan in his feature filmmaking debut, the latest “Creed” movie has collected $58.7 million in North America and $41.8 million overseas to land the biggest opening worldwide in the trilogy. Michael B. Jordan and Jonathan Majors Plan to Collaborate Like ‘De Niro and Pacino’ After ‘Creed III’

Charna Flam Jonathan Majors and Michael B. Jordan are busy promoting “Creed III,” but the pair are hoping to work together again soon. In “Creed III,” Jordan returns as Adonis Creed and stars opposite Majors, who portrays new antagonist, Damian Anderson. Ahead of the March 3 premiere, the two sat down with the New York Times to discuss the film, their individual careers and how they intend to continue to partner for future projects.  In his directorial debut, Jordan placed immense pressure on himself, which trickled down to his preparation in pitching Majors for the role. “I was all in my head, like, ‘OK, what are the things I would want to hear? This dude can do a million different things right now. What’s going to make him take a chance on this actor-director who hasn’t directed [anything]?’” revealed Jordan.
