A man suffered brain damage and spent weeks in a coma following a sickening attack. But James Beaton, from Cardiff, says he is still fighting for justice despite charges being dropped against the two people accused of attacking him.
James, who eight months on remains in hospital, has told WalesOnline he worked as a drug runner in Ely for the two suspects during a period he says he deeply regrets.
The 21-year-old says he wanted to quit but was allegedly prevented from doing so by relentless threats from one of the men. The nightmare culminated on July 13 last year with a beating so vicious that James had his jaw "smashed to bits" and sustained a life-changing brain injury. Two men were charged with kidnap, grievous bodily harm with intent and possession of knives, but the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) dropped the case after two court appearances.
Now, James and his mother Melanie Rudd are calling for police to continue investigating and for anyone with information to come forward. "We want people to speak up," said Melanie in an emotional plea. "Don’t be afraid, or this will keep happening."
James had spent time working at Burger King while studying on a carpentry course at Cardiff and Vale College. After leaving college he took jobs on construction sites but then spent four months out of work. As he struggled to pay his rent and living costs, he started to sell cannabis.
Melanie, 40, said: "Smoking cannabis was where it started, when James was 15. Further down the line, when James was no longer living at home, he got pulled further into that lifestyle and started selling. I really wanted him to continue with the carpentry. I didn't agree with smoking cannabis. It was something we butted heads on as I'm totally against
