Now that the latest series of Love Island has been on our screens for nearly three weeks, recouplings on the hit ITV2 show are in full swing. But while recouplings may be a chance for couples to solidify their blossoming relationships, for some it means a one-way ticket out of the villa. For George Fensom, a surprise recoupling in week one meant that he was the first contestant to be dumped from the 2023 series - a decision that he says was “unfortunate but not unexpected”.
Speaking to OK! about his time on the show, 24 year old George says that while he wasn’t able to find love on the show he was able to make some great friendships which he plans to continue when Islanders begin to leave the villa. “I wanted to find love and I don’t think I was given enough time to make that happen. But if I didn’t come out as a couple, I knew I wanted to meet friends for life.
I feel like I've done one of those things,” he said. “My dumping was unfortunate but not expected. I didn’t have a romantic connection with anyone in the villa, so I was vulnerable but I thought the text would say that there’d be bombshells entering - not that I had to pack my bags.” But now that fellow OG Islander Molly Marsh has also been dumped from the show after bombshell Kady McDermott chose to couple up with Zachariah Noble, George says that he is planning to reconnect with his Love Island pal and build on these memories.
“I feel like I’ve got an emotional connection to the show now and the FOMO (fear of missing out) has been huge,” George added. “As soon as Molly left the show, I reached out to her and sent her a message of support. I figured out when she’d be flying based on my own experience leaving the show and I wished her a safe flight on Saturday.
