‘Transition’ Review: A Riveting Portrait of Gender Transitioning That Successfully Marries Personal & Political Storytelling [Tribeca]

A trans man has to navigate the complexities of gender transition treatment while also chronicling the Afghani Taliban in Monica Villamizar and Jordan Bryon’s intensely personal and political “Transition.” Despite its relatively straightforward title, this documentary, which premiered at Tribeca, is a staggering work that, somehow, manages to contextualize not only Bryon’s personal transition but also juxtapose that life against the deeply segregated Taliban fighters that he is chronicling for The New York Times.

‘I.S.S.’ Review: Ariana DeBose and Chris Messina Lend Gravitas to Low-Key Space Thriller

Michael Nordine author “Indie sci-fi thriller” aren’t words we get to say often enough, even if the reason why is obvious: Making aliens, rocket ships, and the cold vacuum of space look real is expensive. Tribeca Film Festival offering “I.S.S.” avoids that issue by taking place entirely aboard the International Space Station, which becomes the staging ground for a proxy war when a nuclear conflict breaks out between America and Russia. That premise wouldn’t have been out of place in a collection of short stories by Ray Bradbury, and “Our Friend” director Gabriela Cowperthwaite, working from a Black List script by Nick Shafir, comes close to maximizing its potential with help from a stellar ensemble led by Ariana DeBose and Chris Messina.

‘First Time Female Director’ Review: Chelsea Peretti’s Chaotic Feature Film Debut Is As Hilarious As It Is Bleak – Tribeca Festival

Written and directed by Chelsea Peretti, First Time Female Filmmaker lives in the self-deprecating world of meta storytelling. Debuting at the Tribeca Festival in Spotlight Narrative, Peretti put so much of herself into this narrative, it could work as a documentary. It’s also such a comically honest portrayal of what women must endure if they want to get ahead in any career, let alone the theater business. Having to constantly prove to yourself and others that you are capable is so exhausting, but can also be rewarding if you are set up for success. Many are often left to fend for themselves, and the film shows one way of how that can happen.

Academy Award-nominated actress, multi-platinum recording musician, and producer, Hailee Steinfeld wants to produce more content.“I just can’t wait to do something that challenges me in a way that I haven’t been challenged yet,” Steinfeld told actress Ayo Edebiri on Friday at Tribeca Festival’s Storytellers series. “I would love to produce something that I’m not in. To understand that role in its entirety on its own.”Steinfeld’s first producing gig was Apple TV+’s Dickinson, which she also starred in. The role earned her a 2020 Peabody Award. Most recently, the actress reprised her role as Spider-Gwen in Spiderman: Across the Spider-Verse. The previous installment, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, won a 2019 Academy Award for Best Animated Feature.“I didn’t have the opportunity to record with any of the other actors (in the first film),” Steinfeld said. “It wasn’t until we were doing press for the film that I found out that Shameik Moore, who plays Miles Morales (recorded with other people). He said, ‘I had the best time sitting with,’ and he started listing all the people he recorded with. I was like, ‘How do I get in the room with people?’ I didn’t know that was an option.”Steinfeld ended up recording Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse with Moore, Issa Rea, and Shea Wigham.

‘The Adults’ Review: Dustin Guy Defa’s Indie Drama About Siblings Experiencing Grief And Reconnection – Tribeca Festival

Complicated sibling relationships are the basis of Dustin Guy Defa’s new film The Adults. The film depicts the emotional journey of three siblings played by Michael Cera, Hannah Gross, and Sophia Lillis, reuniting in their Mother’s death, a scenario that, while rife with potential conflict, also presents an opportunity for reconnection, understanding, and healing. As Defa portrays, such a reunion can cause the distance that has grown between siblings over time to become painfully real.

‘The Walking Dead: Dead City’ Has Beloved Characters Maggie & Negan Survive A Post-Apocalyptic Manhattan In Latest Spinoff – Tribeca Festival

Once among TV’s most popular series, AMC’s The Walking Dead followed Rick Grimes, a sheriff’s deputy who wakes from a coma to find the world overrun by zombies, colloquially referred to as “walkers.” As he searches for his missing wife and son, Rick encountered a variety of survivors and learns the profound depths of human cruelty and resilience. Over time, the show’s focus shifted from simple survival amid the walker outbreak to conflicts between surviving communities, each striving to establish their own vision of a new civilization. The central theme emphasized the struggles and ethical dilemmas that arise in this gruesome and uncertain world.

‘Waitress, The Musical – Live on Broadway!’ Review: A Heartfelt Reimagining Of Adrienne Shelly’s Indie Swan Song – Tribeca Festival

In hindsight, it’s quite amazing that anyone could watch Adrienne Shelly’s final film as a director and see it as anything but a movie. It was a good one, a simple story about a small-town woman who falls pregnant by her abusive lover and complicates matters by having an affair with her gynecologist. Starring Keri Russell, the film was funny, romantic, frankly feminist and pulled no punches when it needed to, and its modest success of the box office made it all the more tragic that Shelly, murdered in her own apartment by a construction worker in 2006, would never make another.

It is always an occasion for celebration when Jon Hamm and Tina Fey are back together on screen — big or small — having shared credits on various 30 Rock and SNL episodes (and the upcoming film version of Fey’s Mean Girls). But their latest collaboration is a clear departure, as well as a rare chance to see Fey out of her comedic zone.

‘I.S.S.’ Review: Ariana DeBose Outer-Space Thriller Is Respectable But Lifeless

While the Cold War has long been over a second one brews between the USA and Russia inside “I.S.S.,” Gabriela Cowperthwaite’s frustratingly broad yet stylish space thriller that just premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival.Considering the growing political tensions between the two countries today, this is a movie one might be tempted to adorn with adjectives such as “timely” and “urgent.” Except “I.S.S.”—a title inexplicably fashioned with three periods—is too generic a genre exercise to matter, one that vaguely orbits notions such as trust, selflessness, teamwork and the hazards of blind nationalism with the most simplistic messages to transmit about them.Working from a Blacklist script by debuting screenwriter Nick Shafir, Cowperthwaite’s pressure-cooker outing is set sometime in the near future, introducing us via an efficient title card to the brief history of the International Space Station (ISS), founded decades ago as a symbol of the collaboration between the US and Russian governments. Today, the ISS is primarily a research facility covering advancements in medicine, technology and space exploration, occupied continually with a team of US astronauts and Russian cosmonauts.

76th annual Tony Awards, returning host Ariana DeBose addressed the ongoing Writers Guild of America (WGA) strike with studios during what normally would have been a traditional song-and-dance-filled opening monologue. Instead, a planned performance written by Lin-Manuel Miranda was scrapped while the ceremony was allowed to go forward with live performances of nominated musicals and the handing out of awards, but with no scripted material.DeBose opened the show by opening up a blank script, which appeared to be no problem for the seasoned performer who danced her way on-stage to a jazzy medley of pre-existing Broadway hits, reimagined and newly orchestrated, thus not crossing the picket line of script writing, or rather, lyric writing.Macy Schmidt and Benjamin Rauhala constructed and arranged the medley after Miranda pulled the song he was working on for the opening number, in solidarity with the WGA strike. The dance and music-forward number was met with a standing ovation from the crowd, which proved that no words were needed to kick off the big night. After kicking off her dancing shoes, DeBose addressed the audience, «Well, well, well, DeBose began.
