Christmas is a time when plenty of festive food is enjoyed, but one that's particularly loved is the mince pie.
Whether you like them plain, or warm with a dollop of whipped cream or brandy butter, there is something about the humble pastry filled with fruits and spices that instantly produces Christmas cheer.
With less than one month until the big day, supermarkets have begun to stock their takes on the treat. With the recipe being fairly simple, there is the question of whether different mince pie brands taste the same.
Daily Record reporter - and avid mince pie fan - Lucy Farrell set out to figure this out, by performing a taste test on pies from four supermarkets. It turns out that not all are created equally, both in flavour and price.
She even tried one chain's premium selection to see if they were worth forking out the extra cash - and the results may surprise you. Read below to find out how she got on after trying mince pies from Lidl, Tesco, Sainsbury's and Marks & Spencer.
Marks and Spencer all butter mince pies come in a pack of six and are decently sized. With the first bite, I found the filling to have a decent balance of flavours. It was a perfect mix of sweetness and fruit with just the right amount of brandy.
The filling also had plenty of bite and rather than being boiled down to a compote, you could still taste each individual sultana. The pastry's flavour worked well with the filling.
I found both to be equally matched in proportion, but my partner whom I performed my taste test with found these to be "too cakey".
While browsing the M&S shelves, another mince pie caught my eye. In place of classic pastry, these are made with "chewy cookie dough" made with browned butter for "added richness".
My curiosity

Nicholas Weinstock The first time I went to Ghana, I was 19 years old and volunteering to build a health clinic in a rural village. It was the early ‘90s, I was a teenaged lunatic, and everything bad that could have happened to me did: I got malaria; I was beaten up by soldiers on the border with the Ivory Coast — but I also encountered wonderful people and stunning and moving and unforgettable experiences and friendships.

Dennis Harvey Film Critic Palestinian refugees have been arriving in the slum district of Sabra and Shalila on the outskirts of Beirut since what Israel calls the War of Independence in 1948. Forty-four years later, their presence (and that of suspected PLO fighters) got targeted in a mid-September massacre by the Christian militia known as Lebanese Forces, executed while Israeli Defense Forces who’d already invaded the nation three months prior stood by. Another four decades have passed since, during which span the area has remained not just a last-resort magnet for multinational refugees, but “the most lawless, poorest, dirtiest place” in the city.

Coachella lookbook. If this isn't prove 2010s style is coming back, I don't know Opting to go necklace-free, the star donned a smokey eye and an entire ensemble straight off the Ralph Lauren runway for Elle's Women in Hollywood event (Ralph Lauren was one of the sponsors), wearing pants, a top, a belt and a shawl from the brand. She carried a small black clutch and wore her hair in a blunt bob parted right in the middle, a corporate contrast to the 70s/Western style of the rest of her outfit. Here's posing it up..And here's Vanessa Hudgens in the machine washable version of this garment in 2012, at Coachella. Also, a model then named Hailey Baldwin, also at Coachella, in 2016.Should we break out the flower crowns and ironic mustache temporary tattoos or is Washington going to elevate this look beyond its music fest moment? After all, the style is more 70s than anything, and we'd love to see her try it with jeans instead of black slacks.Because the thing is, Kerry Washington can pull off pretty much anything.
