House prices have been rising considerably ever since the pandemic first started due to a high level of demand outweighing supply. Although the property market is now showing signs of slowing down, it's unlikely that you'll be able to buy a house for as little as you once could.
That is unless you snap up a home at an auction, where properties tend to go on sale for a much cheaper price that what they'd be offered on the traditional market. Helena, 26, managed to find a bargain two-bed home in Bolton for just £120,000 at the end of 2022, and over the last year she and her fiancé have transformed it into a gorgeous family home.
Helena spoke to the Manchester Evening News as part of our Where I Live series. Each week we speak to a different homeowner who lives in Greater Manchester to hear about their home-buying journey - and look at how they've made their house a home.

Helena from Hindley Green and her partner Andy got on the property ladder in 2020, buying their first house in February 2020 just before the pandemic hit. The couple bought a three-bed end-terraced house in Westhoughton, where Andy grew up, for £116,000.
After living in it throughout each of the lockdowns, the pair soon realised they'd grown out of their first home and wanted a fresh start. "We grew out of it quicker than we initially thought because we had spent so much time there, we just wanted a new space," Helena told the Manchester Evening News.
