For the first five episodes of Apple TV+’s “The Crowded Room,” audiences have known Amanda Seyfried’s character Rya only as the psychiatrist sitting across the table from Danny (Tom Holland) during their jailhouse sessions at Rikers Island. To this point, the series has ricocheted back and forth in the timeline of Danny’s life, piecing together the story of a young man whose point of view is influenced –– and shattered –– by the trauma of his childhood and the people who seep into his world.

Holland said on “Live With Kelly and Mark” that bad reviews had nothing to do with his decision to break from acting. The choice was made when “The Crowded Room” wrapped filming last year, meaning Holland is already months into his Hollywood hiatus. “It’s so funny. Obviously, ‘The Crowded Room’ came out. We didn’t have very favorable reviews,” Holland said. “So the press story was that I have taken this year off because of the reviews. But I’m eight months into my year off. I’ve been chilling at home in London, going to Grand Prixes, playing golf…”

The show is based on the real crimes of Billy Milligan, who was diagnosed with dissociative identity disorder. “It was a tough time, for sure,” Holland told Extra about the show’s production. “We were exploring certain emotions that I have definitely never experienced before. And then on top of that, being a producer, dealing with the day-to-day problems that come with any film set, just added that extra level of pressure.”
