Industry experts are calling for the Government to provide up to £1,500 in free cash to the worst-off families to help them with their energy bills and get through the winter. This proposed social tariff is aimed at providing more support to the most vulnerable people who struggle to pay their bills.
Charities and energy companies are advocating for a change in approach towards how households pay for their gas and electricity, especially with the current surge in energy costs. While there is already some targeted support available, such as the Warm Homes Discount, experts argue that it is insufficient, and more people are in dire need of assistance, especially as winter approaches.
According to research by Citizens Advice, over 12 million households on the lowest incomes would be eligible for support, with the average qualifying household seeing a reduction of £381 in their energy bill, and some households receiving up to £1,500. E.on, one of the energy companies, supports the introduction of a social tariff, which has garnered the backing of consumer champion Martin Lewis.
However, implementing such a tariff would be costly for the Government, considering the support already provided to all households during the cost of living crisis, which was deemed unsustainable in the long run. Energy companies have faced criticism for their substantial profits while many people struggle, but E.on asserts that it supports lower bills for those most in need.
The company has urged the Government to provide specific support to eligible low-income customers by creating a social tariff, which would offer a cheaper energy deal.
