After a devastating three year battle with Covid-19 and sadly being admitted to hospital again at end of 2023 with a heart attack, Kate Garraway has confirmed her husband Derek Draper's passing. Since 2023, the 56 year old had been in and out of hospital many times and became the UK's longest-suffering Covid patient. But his wife of 18 years, Kate, lovingly stood by his side and cared for him as he continually fought for his life.
After contracting Covid-19, Derek was sadly left with a series of health complications including blood clots in his lungs and holes in his heart. That meant the Kate, 56, who shared two children with Derek - daughter Darcey, 17, and son William, 14 - had to adapt the inside of their family home in North London. In order to make it more accessible for his needs, Kate installed a ramp outside their property so a wheelchair could be able to enter with ease.
It's thought they were also considering a lift to the garden. The TV presenter explained in her documentary, Finding Derek: "We are planning for ground-floor living, presuming he will be on a stretcher or in a wheelchair." She also enlisted a machine installed that helped Derek stand upright as he fought to regain his motor functions. Kate, who is a regular face on Good Morning Britain, also worked closely with occupational therapists and tradesmen to make sure the house was wheelchair-accessible and all basic amenities are downstairs.
