Nigel, 59, from Rochdale, decided to tell his doctor about his feelings by writing them down on a piece of paper. And, on handing the list over to the medic, Nigel instantly felt better for opening up to someone else.
On hearing about his mental health struggles, the GP suggested Nigel contact NHS Heywood, Middleton and Rochdale Talking Therapies, a service run by The Big Life group in partnership with Pennine Care NHS Foundation Trust.
The service provides a range of therapies for those experiencing depression, anxiety and panic. It also helps people with obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and issues including stress, lower mood and poor sleep.
Following a short wait, Nigel was assessed by a practitioner. They agreed he could be helped by cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT), a talking therapy which helps people change their thoughts and behaviour.
Nigel started his 16-week talking therapy course in May 2023. The sessions, held by cognitive behavioural therapist Charlotte McKeating-Jones, saw Nigel talk through his anxieties over Zoom calls. He was set homework regularly and exercises to help change his thoughts and behaviour.
