A Libyan suspected of playing a key role in the Lockerbie bombing is set to face trial after being handed over to US authorities. The development was welcomed by victims’ families and a policeman at the scene called for “justice to be served” 34 years on from the tragedy. Abu Agila Masud was detained by US officials charged with preparing the bomb that brought down Pan Am Flight 103 on December 21, 1988, as it flew from Heathrow Airport to New York.
All 243 passengers and 16 crew on board the plane died. The other 11 victims were killed when the wreckage crashed down on a residential street in the Dumfriesshire town. It remains the deadliest terror attack to occur on British soil. Last night, prosecutors at the Crown Office and Police Scotland confirmed they are now liaising with US authorities to bring the suspect to justice. It has not been confirmed where Masud will face trial.
Two years ago, US department of justice (DoJ) officials formally charged Masud in his absence in connection with the Lockerbie bombing after concluding there was enough evidence to link him to the production of the device used to blow up the plane. It was reported last month that Masud had been kidnapped by a militia group in Libya, prompting speculation he would be handed to the US.
Charges unsealed in December 2020 allege Masud was directly responsible for setting the bomb’s timer. Further to this, the DoJ claims Masud was personally thanked by Libya’s then dictator Muammar Gaddafi for his role in the bombing, which was hailed by intelligence officers as a “total success”. Gaddafi later accepted his regime’s role in the attacks and paid compensation to the families of victims.
