Health experts have warned people not to eat their food too fast as it could increase their risk of diabetes and obesity.
Urging people to slow down when chewing, Jonathan Wolf, founder and CEO of ZOE, and Dr. Sarah Berry, stressed that in today's world, people are not "mindfully" taking their time to eat a meal. This is due to the combination of what we eat and how fast-paced our lives are.
Explaining the "five-minute rule" on the ZOE podcast, Dr Berry said people who eat too quickly will likely be more overweight than those who take their time. She urged people to wait at least five minutes to allow your brain to register that you are full.
She explained: "Your brain needs time to realise it's full and studies have shown that it takes between five or even up to 20 minutes for your mind to catch up with your belly.
"Research also tells us that eating more slowly increases the response of appetite-regulating hormones - these are hormones tell us how full or how hungry we are. One study found that 42 percent of children whose parents reported that they ate quickly were also overweight, and these children were also more likely to show overeating behaviours according to what their parents reported."
The experts added these findings suggest that eating faster makes it much easier for us to continue eating even when we're not hungry.
