Box Office: ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’ Stays Strong (For a Superhero Movie) With $60.5 Million, ‘Book Club 2’ Misses Mark

Rebecca Rubin Film and Media Reporter Disney’s “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3″ was victorious again at the domestic box office, adding $60.5 million in its second weekend of release. Ticket sales dropped by 49% from its debut, marking an impressive hold… at least for a superhero movie. Across more than 30 Marvel entries, only “Black Panther” (45%) and “Thor” (47%) have had stronger second weekend holds. By comparison, recent Marvel movies such as “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania,” “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” and “Thor: Love and Thunder” declined by nearly 70% in their sophomore outings. Those are brutal falls, even for movies that debuted to more than $100 million. Those entries were reminders that Marvel may remain critic-proof in terms of opening weekends, but they’re no longer immune to quickly falling back down to Earth.

Rebecca Rubin Film and Media Reporter Wahoo! “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” crossed $500 million at the domestic box office, one of only 19 films to ever surpass that benchmark. In its fifth weekend of release, the movie collected a huge $18.5 million from 3,909 North American theaters and landed in second place behind Disney’s “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” ($116 million). The 'Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3' Cast Shares Their Favorite Song From the Series (Exclusive)

series has a reputation for having some of the best needle drops in the MCU, and is no exception. From the very first moments of the first film in 2014, which featured Chris Pratt's Star-Lord bopping along to Redbone's «Come and Get Your Love» on his Walkman, director James Gunn has punctuated his fun-loving space adventure with a memorable collection of songs, immortalized on the film's aptly titled  soundtracks. So, what are some of the favorite needle drops of the Guardians themselves? ET's Ash Crossan sat down with some of the cast, ahead of the release of the third and final, to find out.«Lake Shore Drive» by Aliotta Haynes Jeremiah«I think my favorite song of the entire trilogy is probably the opening song for the opening movie — it's probably 'Come and Get Your Love.'… I love that song, but I also got to say there's a really special place in my heart for 'Lake Shore Drive' in the second movie, which is from my past. James and I grew up in the Midwest, and that was kind of a local hit in the Midwest.

‘Guardians of the Galaxy 3’ to End ‘Super Mario’s’ Four-Week Box Office Reign With $120 Million Debut

Rebecca Rubin Film and Media Reporter “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3,” the conclusion to Marvel’s trilogy about an intergalactic crew of misfits, looks to kick off summer moviegoing season with a bang. The superhero adventure is hoping to bring in $120 million in its opening weekend, falling in between the starts of 2014’s “Guardians of the Galaxy” ($94 million) and 2017’s sequel ($146 million). There’s a chance that “Vol. 3” could fall short of those projections and land closer to a less-spectacular $110 million to $118 million, according to independent tracking services. Of course, it’s hard to chide a film that hits $100 million in its domestic debut. But the idea, especially for tentpoles that cost $200 million-plus, is to grow, not shrink, the fanbase with new installments. Reviews for “Guardians 3” are decent (it holds a 78% on Rotten Tomatoes) but sources say tracking has been stagnant in the lead-up to its theatrical premiere. That points to either mounting indifference to the newest phase in the Marvel Cinematic Universe or a sign that Disney waited too long to conclude the “Guardians” story, which began nearly a decade ago and turned Chris Pratt and Dave Bautista into bona fide movie stars and writer-director James Gunn into an A-list filmmaker. At the same time, there’s not really a gauge for a franchise that’s 32 films deep.
