ET's Deidre Behar spoke with the 41-year-old actress at PaleyFest, and she revealed the reason behind her departure from the long-running medical drama.McCreary said leaving the show was a «largely creative» decision, noting, «I have lived with and loved Maggie Pierce for nine years. It's a long time.»«At the beginning of every season, I think about Maggie's origins and I think about how she's grown and how she's transformed,» McCreary explained.
«I always think about the fact that she is of Ellis Grey stock and she's got that hunger, that ambition. I always reflect on how that has transformed her and how that compares with the family she's created, the community that she's built… It's about people coming there to grow up and move on.»McCreary has yet to shoot her final episode of the series, but has some predictions for how that day will go.«I think it's gonna be super fun for one thing. It's going to be joyful and really, really fun,» she said.
«Of course [there will be] some tears. There are gonna be tears. I'll be sad, but I can't help but just be really full of gratitude for the whole experience and the family and the community that I built along the way.

Grey’s Anatomy continues to write TV history with a renewal for a landmark 20th season, extending its record as the longest running primetime medical drama. Along with the pickup, which was fully expected, ABC also confirmed Deadline’s report that Meg Marinis will serve as showrunner for season 20. She replaces longtime Grey’s Anatomy and Station 19 showrunner Krista Vernoff, who is leaving both series at the end of this season.
Joe Otterson TV Reporter “Grey’s Anatomy” has been renewed for Season 20 at ABC. With the renewal, the series continues its run as the longest running primetime medical drama in TV history. In addition, series executive producer Meg Marinis will serve as showrunner on Season 20. Marinis takes over from Krista Vernoff, who was reported to be stepping down from “Grey’s Anatomy” and its spinoff “Station 19” back in January. The Season 19 finale of “Grey’s Anatomy” will air on May 18. The show has seen a number of exits this season, most notably Vernoff and Kelly McCreary (who’s played Dr. Maggie Pierce for nine seasons) — and series lead Ellen Pompeo, kind of. Pompeo has been with the show since it debuted, but in the Feb. 23 episode, her character Meredith Grey moved from Seattle to Boston. She will continue to provide the voiceover at the beginning and end of each episodes, and she’ll also appear on the finale. Pompeo’s status for Season 20 is still up in the air.
