Grammy Awards Restrict Eligibility for Music Containing AI Content: ‘Only Human Creators’

An English literature graduate of Salford University in Manchester, England, who began his working life as a lecturer in the university’s School of Arts and Media, Khalid dreamed of working with actors to create films that reflect our 21st century experience of a fractured world, dominated by mobile phones and social media, where time no longer seems to follow a linear path. His chance to make his dreams reality came when a script he wrote while still teaching at Salford was picked up by iFeatures – a BBC Film/Creative England/British Film Institute program for debut directors. A development grant in early 2020 enabled him to realize his script “In Camera,” which had its world premiere Saturday in Karlovy Vary Film Festival’s Proxima competition slot (for the Variety review see here).

The 2024 Olivier Awards recognizing achievement in London theater will be held April 14, 2024, at Royal Albert Hall. Nominations will be announced Tuesday, March 12.

A work that contains no human authorship is not eligible in any Categories,” a description of the measure reads [via Exclaim].Despite this, a piece of music that has had some assistance from AI is permitted: “The human authorship component of the work submitted must be meaningful and more than de minimis.” This means that artists may use AI as an aid but the human contribution must be the most significant.There are no details on how the Academy intends to prove if AI is used and what is exactly is considered “more than de minimis” regarding the human element.It appears that the move has come amid conversations on the ethics of creativity and AI.

Last year’s new additions included songwriter of the year and song for social change. Additionally, the existing categories of producer of the year, non-classical and songwriter of the year, non-classical will be moved to the general field — meaning that all Grammy voters will be allowed to vote in those categories, which previously were “craft” or specialized categories, along with engineering, packaging and the like, for which only members working in those areas voted.

Cynthia Littleton Business Editor Big changes are afoot for the Golden Globe Awards now that Dick Clark Productions and Todd Boehly’s Eldridge have acquired the assets of the nonprofit Hollywood Foreign Press Association, which will shutter as the awards franchise moves into a new era. The new owners will use the assets and the cash on hand from the HFPA to establish the Golden Globe Foundation, which will continue on the HFPA’s tradition of charitable giving. The awards show itself and related assets will now be part of the for-profit operations of Dick Clark Productions, which has long been allied with the HFPA for the awards show. The move out of the HFPA’s nonprofit status will allow the Globes to pursue many more commercial opportunities than were possible under the HFPA regime.
