‘Glass Onion’ Gets One-Week Theatrical Release, Netflix to Screen Film in 600 U.S. Theaters

EXCLUSIVE: In an unprecedented move, Netflix and major exhibition circuits in the U.S. and UK recently agreed a 30-day theatrical window for Rian Johnson’s Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery. This comes after years of discussions on finding “a way forward to show their high-quality productions on our screens,” says Tim Richards, founder and CEO of Vue International which will be showing the anticipated sequel in its theaters in the UK, Germany and Italy.

“Glass Onion,” is set for a Netflix release next month and Johnson confirmed at a BFI London Film Festival press conference that Blanc is queer.Johnson was asked about a particular scene in the upcoming movie that seemingly showed Blanc having a male lover.“Yes, obviously he is,” the “Looper” filmmaker bluntly told reporters.“There’s nobody in the world I can imagine in bringing me more joy for Benoit Blanc to be with,” he added.Craig, 54, then interjected, saying: “No spoilers [but] who wouldn’t want to live with that person?”The stand-alone sequel will have a one-week limited theatrical release on Nov. 23 before moving to Netflix on Dec.

Director Rian Johnson confirmed that Daniel Craig’s popular Knives Out sleuth Benoit Blanc is Queer during a press conference at the London Film Festival.

The mammoth cast of Rian Johnson’s murder mystery sequel, Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, sidestepped spoilers and jumped over plot lines as they presented their film Sunday morning at a London Film Festival press conference.

A fairy tale that follows the relationship between man and cat, the film had its world premiere in competition at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival and now has its North American premiere in the Currents section of the New York Film Festival. Kino Lorber plans to qualify “A Short Story” for the 96th Academy Awards, showing it theatrically nationwide in early 2023 in tandem with a theatrical re-release of “Long Day’s Journey Into Night.” “Kino Lorber rarely acquires short films, but Bi Gan has packed more cinematic delight into the fifteen minutes of ‘A Short Story’ than many feature length films deliver in two hours,” said Kino Lorber SVP Wendy Lidell. The deal was brokered by Les Films du Losange.

Rian Johnson’s murder-mystery sequel Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery will receive a theatrical UK release after Netflix struck deals with Vue International and Cineworld.

Manori Ravindran International Editor Netflix has struck deals with European cinema giant Vue International and Cineworld to put “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery” in British movie theaters. The film will screen at select Vue and Cineworld cinemas across the U.K. an entire month before the movie hits the streaming service. “Glass Onion” will screen from Nov. 23-29, and then leave cinemas for three weeks before dropping on Netflix on Dec. 23. Tickets are now on sale for the U.K. cinema run. Studios have recognized the value of the theatrical window and now we’re seeing Netflix embracing the big screen theatrical release too.

After “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery” premiered to rave reviews at TIFF last month, there was much speculation if Netflix would wait until December 23 to debut the film. Director Rian Johnson even pressed the streamer to give the film a limited theatrical release before its premiere date.

Michaela Zee editor Miami Dade College’s Miami Film Festival GEMS has announced its line-up for its ninth annual event, with “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery” set to open the festival on Nov. 3. The “Knives Out” sequel follows Detective Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig) as he travels to Greece to solve another murder mystery. Along with Craig, the cast includes Edward Norton, Janelle Monáe, Kathryn Hahn, Leslie Odom Jr., Jessica Henwick, Madelyn Cline, Kate Hudson and Dave Baustista. Miami Film Festival will honor the ensemble cast of “Glass Onion” with the inaugural Ensemble Award. Steven Spielberg’s “The Fabelmans” will close out the festival on Nov. 10, with star Paul Dano virtually receiving the Precious Gem Award.
