Gillian Anderson once took a trip to Glasgow to officially open a charity shop with a cause very close to her heart. The Sex Education star took a trip to Mount Florida in the city's southside in 1999, where she 'cut the ribbon' to help celebrate the launch of the Neurofibromatosis Association store on Cathcart Road.
The Hollywood star - whose grandfather was a Scot - was in Glasgow at the time, as she filmed period drama The House Of Mirth in locations around the area, including Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum.
It was her way of giving a helping hand to sufferers of the genetic disease that causes tumours to form throughout the body, also known as NF.
Heartbreakingly, the X Files icon's brother Aaron suffered from NF and he died of a brain tumour in 2011.
Gillian - who stars in upcoming Netflix drama Scoop which revisits Prince Andrew's infamous BBC interview following sexual assault allegations - had embarked on a campaign with her mum Rosemary in 1998 to raise awareness and provide information and assistance for other NF sufferers.
"One of the hardest things about NF is that it's progressive," she said in an interview at the time.
"In Aaron's case, we are as supportive as we possibly can be with where he is at this time, but the reality is that it can progress and affect him more seriously on a physical level at any time in his life."
When Gillian was just 16, three-year-old Aaron was diagnosed with the condition.
During the 1999 visit, the Sex Education and The Crown star was quoted in the Sunday Mail as saying: "Glasgow is a fantastic place. Unfortunately I’ve seen so little of the city because of the hours I’ve been working”.
She visited Glasgow again in 2005 to film a scene at the city's Royal Infirmary for The Last

After weeks of anticipation, Netflix’s brand new real-life drama Scoop is finally here! The big budget drama focuses on the gripping narrative surrounding Emily Maitlis' groundbreaking and now iconic Newsnight interview with Prince Andrew back in 2019.This broadcast sent shockwaves through the public, sparking widespread uproar over Prince Andrew's association with Jeffrey Epstein and ultimately lead to his withdrawal from public life as a Duke. Scoop ( Friday, April 5), centers on Prince Andrew's first sit-down interview about his friendship with convicted sex offender, the late financier, (which later resulted in him stepping down from official royal duties), but the more profound story here is how it happened. That's where Anderson comes in. She plays BBC Newsnight anchor and journalist, Emily Maitlis, who conducted the infamous 2019 interview after months of tenacious work by her producer, Sam McAlister (played by Billie Piper), to secure the booking.“I remember hearing about the interview, but I hadn't seen it right [away],” Anderson tells me over Zoom from her New York hotel room.
When Prince Andrew submitted to being interviewed by Emily Maitlis for Newsnight, it made blockbuster viewing. Now Netflix’s Scoop brings the behind-the-scenes story to life and it’s even more compelling. Based on the book by former Newsnight editor Sam McAlister, Scoop looks at how Sam (played by Billie Piper) secured the royal chat for presenter Emily Maitlis (Gillian Anderson), who went on to quiz the prince on his relationship with convicted paedophile Jeffrey Epstein and allegations of sexual assault against him by Virginia Giuffre.
Guy Lodge Film Critic It’s no great slight to “Scoop” to say that it’s no more compelling than the real-life news broadcast on which it pivots. It’s also no less compelling than said broadcast, which was, after all, a doozy: the 2019 episode of “BBC Newsnight” in which anchor Emily Maitlis interviewed Prince Andrew about his friendship with the late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
