The cost of living crisis has hit millions from all around the country with many Brits wondering how they’ll tackle a rise in bills. On Thursday it seemed there could be an answer to questions over the rise in energy bills when the Chancellor announced a new package of support that gives families on benefits a one off £650 payment.
Rishi Sunak said the help provided would go towards “millions of the most vulnerable people in our society”. He added that he had offered “significant support” for households who were facing “acute distress” and the payment would come in two parts.
The £650 payment is known as the Cost of Living Payment and available to those on these benefits: Income-based Jobseekers Allowance, Income-related Employment and Support Allowance, Income Support, Working Tax Credit, Child Tax Credit and Pension Credit. For those on benefits paid by the Department for Work and Pensions the payment will be made in two lump sums. The first will be made “from July” and a second will arrive in Autumn, with no set date yet.
On Thursday Rishi told Parliament: “We know that people are facing challenges with the cost of living and that is why today I’m stepping in with further support to help with rising energy bills.” The payments will be tax-free and won't affect any benefits Brits are currently getting. Earlier in May we reported that from October, the Warm Home Discount is giving three million of England and Wales' poorest homes £140 off their bills. The Warm Home Discount is a one-off discount on electricity bills and those who are eligible will have to prove themselves.
