Brent Lang Executive Editor Fresh off the release of “Road House,” Amazon MGM Studios has closed a three-year, first-look film deal with Jake Gyllenhaal’s Nine Stories. Under the pact, Amazon MGM Studios will have first dibs on narrative features that the actor’s production company makes. The deal includes theatrical, as well as streaming releases.
Gyllenhaal most recently starred in “Road House,” a remake of the cult Patrick Swayze film, which was released on Amazon’s streaming service, Prime Video. The film debuted on March 21 and has reached over 50 million worldwide viewers on the service. Prior to that, Gyllenhaal starred in “Guy Ritchie’s The Covenant,” which the studio released theatrically last year.
Gyllenhaal founded Nine Stories in 2015 with Riva Marker. Most recently, Nine Stories produced Antoine Fuqua’s “The Guilty,” which starred Gyllenhaal and debuted on Netflix. It also produced “Wildlife,” which marked Paul Dano’s directorial debut and starred Carey Mulligan; David Gordon Green’s “Stronger,” starring Gyllenhaal as Boston Marathon bombing survivor Jeff Bauman; and Antonio Campos’ Southern gothic, “The Devil All the Time.” Other releases include Reinaldo Marcus Green’s “Joe Bell” and Tate Taylor’s “Breaking News in Yuba County.” For the stage, Nine Stories produced “We’re Only Alive for a Short Amount of Time” by playwright David Cale, with Gyllenhaal serving as a producer on “Sea Wall/A Life” and Jeremy O.

Under the new pact, the specialty studio, which has worked with Colman on “The Favourite” and “Empire of Light,” will develop and produce feature-length motion pictures with the production company. South of the River Pictures was founded by Colman, Sinclair and their long-time partner in crime, Tom Carver, to develop and produce original scripted comedies and dramas with “an authored sensibility.” Colman and Sinclair have been married since 2001.
