Medical experts have highlighted the most 'key' symptoms of the new Covid 'Pirola' variant as it spreads worldwide.
The variant BA.2.86 was first identified last month via a PCR test, according to Public Health Scotland (PHS). Since then it's been discovered in a number of different countries, and is able to rapidly mutate with more and more cases appearing in the UK.
Now, a medical expert has named four of the key 'Pirola' symptoms that people should be looking out for if they become unwell.
Dr Chris Papadopoulos, Principal Lecturer in Public Health at the University of Bedfordshire, says the key signs are what you might expect from Covid:
Dr Papadopoulos told Express.co.uk : "As of now, we don't have specific information about whether the symptoms of the Pirola variant differ significantly from other variants."
It's currently not known whether the new strain causes any symptoms that differ from other Covid variants.
“Therefore, it's too early to definitively identify any unique tell-tale signs of this variant,” the professor added.
The expert recommended getting tested for Covid if you have any of these symptoms and suspect that you have the condition.
And the advice from the NHS states you should stay home and limit your contact with others if you're showing any symptoms.
At the moment, information about the dangers of Pirola is limited because of how new the strain is.
However, scientists have discovered the Omicron subvariant carries 30 more mutations in the spike protein compared to the previous dominant variant.
Dr Papadopoulos explained this means that Pirola could “potentially be more transmissible and severe”.
“However, we need to exercise caution in drawing definitive conclusions until further analyses, such as

Since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic, we’ve become accustomed to new variants of the virus emerging as it mutates and spreads. But last month, the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) confirmed that the BA.2.86 – since been named Pirola – has made its way to the UK and NHS officials have labelled it the “most concerning variant” since Omicron. It appears, say scientists, to carry a high number of 'mutations' in its spike protein so they're watching it carefully to see if it manages to evade the immune system.
