‘Fire Island’ Review: Joel Kim Booster & Andrew Ahn Deliver An Instant Queer Romcom Classic

Wilson Chapman editorNetflix has released the first trailer for “Persuasion,” the upcoming period film starring Dakota Johnson, based on the classic 1817 Jane Austen novel.Published after Austen’s death, “Persuasion” was the final completed work of the writer (who, as the trailer for the film reminds us, also penned “Emma” and “Pride & Prejudice”), and is considered one of her most mature and sophisticated novels. The story revolves around Anne Elliot (played by Dakota Johnson in the film), an isolated 27-year-old struggling to move on after she broke her engagement with Frederick Wentworth (Cosmo Jarvis), after being persuaded by family friend Lady Russell (Nikki Amuka-Bird).After seven years, the two come back into each other’s orbit when Anne’s family rents their home to his sister and her husband.

Dakota Johnson is the latest actress to embody one of Jane Austen’s leading ladies in the trailer for the upcoming Netflix adaptation of “Persuasion.”Johnson plays Anne Elliot, an overlooked middle daughter who is nonetheless incredibly insightful and clever — if easily persuaded. Surrounded by her entitled relatives, she is on her own when faced with the return of the dashing, self-made Captain Frederick Wentworth (Cosmo Jarvis), with whom she broke off her engagement nearly a decade prior at the behest of those around her deeming it a degrading match.The trailer, which you can watch above, is full of heartfelt and also hilarious moments as Johnson’s Anne navigates her rekindling romance, as well as the emergence of a potential new romance with William Elliot (Henry Golding). It’s by no means easy, but Anne is determined to figure it out without letting other people’s opinions cloud her judgment this time.

Bowen Yang perform a cover of Britney Spears’ “Sometimes” in the Hulu film . In true romcom fashion, the actor gets to bear all his emotions during a pivotal musical moment.While speaking to ET, writer and star Joel Kim Booster and director Andrew Ahn break down the epic moment. “It’s my favorite scene in the movie, for sure,” Booster says.As Howie, Yang takes the stage three quarters of the way through Booster’s queer, modern adaptation of to sing an unexpected version of the 1999 hit song while his friends, Luke (Matt Rogers) and Keegan (Tomás Matos), provide backup and add a little choreography to the scene. The scene comes near the end of their trip to the gay mecca as the limits of Howie and Noah’s (Booster) friendship have been tested by their unexpected and complicated romantic feelings for Charlie (James Scully) and Will (Conrad Ricamora), respectively.  When it comes to the song selection, “it was Bowen’s choice,” Booster says, explaining that the scene itself “was always written into this script [and] that Bowen would sing karaoke in that moment.” He adds, “I asked Bowen for a list of songs he’d be comfortable singing and ‘Sometimes’ was sort of the top choice.
