A busy Glasgow road has been closed by police after a fire broke out in a garage underneath a block of flats early on Saturday morning. Emergency services raced to the scene on Crow Road, in the city's West End, shortly before 5.30am, following reports of a building fire.
Residents were evacuated from their homes and sought refuge at a nearby McDonald's restaurant while firefighters worked to extinguish the flames.
One eyewitness reported an “acrid burning plastic smell” shortly before first responders arrived at the scene. There are no reported serious injuries.
Mark Sherman said: “The fire started at approximately 5.30am and there was an acrid burning plastic smell and a plume of billowing black smoke in the air. Fire crews, the ambulance service and police were all in attendance.
"Evacuated residents were sitting in the street or in the McDonald’s across the road in the retail park. The road is still closed by police.”
A spokesperson for the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service confirmed they were called to reports of a building fire at around 5.28am on Saturday, October 29. Four pumps and an aerial appliance were sent to the scene, where one remains in attendance.
A Police Scotland spokesperson added: “We were made aware of a fire in a parking area under flats off Crow Road in Glasgow shortly after 5.55am on Saturday, 29 October.
“Officers are in attendance to assist the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service. “There are no reports of any injuries and local road closures are in place while emergency services deal with the incident.”
