Fans have rushed to defend BBC radio's Nihal Arthanayake after he was reprimanded for responding to racist trolls on social media. The 52-year-old, who is active on Twitter, has been keen to call out those making racist remarks but the BBC have an issue with him swearing in his responses.
Radio 5's Nihal posted from his Twitter account: "The BBC has a go at me every time I swear at someone on here. It's hard not to at these racists." He tweeted this to his 115,000 followers on Sunday night, where many were eager to offer words of support.
Some fans shared their disbelief over the radio star's treatment following the offensive messages. One user posted: "Then the BBC should cut you some slack, we should all swear at racists. In fact it should be mandatory!!"

Nihal was quick to answer and tweeted: "I am English you melon." Another Twitter user responded to Nihal's tweet about being reprimanded by the BBC, by saying: "What are they doing to support you? Keep fighting !"
Nihal, who presents news and interviews big names on Radio 5, was racially abused in Manchester earlier this year and reported it to the police. Confirming this on Twitter, Nihal wrote on social media at the time: "I wasn't going to report it to the police but my mate said that I should and now I have."
