The Larkins star took home the award for her acclaimed performance in After Love on Sunday (March 13), beating the likes of Lady Gaga and Tessa Thompson. However, it turns out her heartwarming speech really was "from the heart", as the star revealed exclusively to Digital Spy on the red carpet beforehand that she had not prepared anything to say.

"I'm not superstitious or anything, I just feel like I want to speak from the heart if I have the opportunity, or not at all," she added. While the actress is well known for her British TV comedy work, such as on The Larkins, Getting On and The Thick of It, drama After Love marks a departure. The film follows her character Mary Hussain as she learns about her late husband's secrets.

We've got to keep body and soul together. "But I also feel like there's a natural flow in life and we'll see what comes. I enjoy pretty much everything that I ever do.
I love working. "This year's BAFTAs also saw Netflix's The Power of the Dog named Best Film, while director Jane Campion won Best Director. However, star Benedict Cumberbatch lost out Leading Actor to Will Smith for King Richard.

People are still reacting to Sunday’s Oscars ceremony after nominee Will Smith slapped guest presenter Chris Rock for telling a joke about his wife, Jada Pinkett Smith. Perspectives are still being shared on social media and via press and entertainment outlets on not only the situation but also Smith being allowed to stick around to give an acceptance speech instead of being removed from the building.
Oscars stage in Los Angeles on Sunday evening during the telecast and hit presenter Chris Rock for making a joke about his wife, Jada Pinkett-Smith. But if the altercation that still has everyone talking happened in England at the BAFTAs, Smith would have immediately been escorted out of the building.Executives from British Academy of Film and Television Arts discussed with The Hollywood Reporter their thoughts on the viral moment.“They would be removed from the building,” said Sara Putt, chair of BAFTA’s television committee said, after she was asked what BAFTA would do in a similar circumstance.Smith won later that same night the Academy Award for Best Actor for his work in the drama “King Ricard.” He was even given a standing ovation and his speech ran for almost five minutes.Putt also stated that said individual would not be able to stay and collect any awards.
Brian Steinberg Senior TV EditorEveryone’s talking about this week’s furor at the Oscars — even the hosts at Fox News Channel’s “The Five.”On Monday afternoon, regulars Greg Gutfeld, Dana Perino, Jesse Watters and Jeanine Pirro held forth with guest Piers Morgan — the British journalist and TV host who has demonstrated a proclivity for getting into celebrity feuds — sitting in a chair typically reserved for someone with more liberal political views. In the show’s opening segment, however, politics went out the window.
By now, everyone has weighed in on Will Smith and Chris Rock slapping at the Oscars.

LONDON -- Sci-fi epic “Dune” won five prizes and brooding Western “The Power of the Dog” was named best picture as the British Academy Film Awards returned Sunday with a live, black-tie ceremony after a pandemic-curtailed event in 2021.New Zealand filmmaker Jane Campion was named best director for “The Power of the Dog,” becoming only the third woman to win the prize in the awards’ seven-decade history.Lead acting trophies went to Hollywood star Will Smith and British performer Joanna Scanlan, as an event that has worked to overcome a historic lack of diversity recognized a wide range of talents — including its first deaf acting winner in Troy Kotsur for “CODA.”Last year’s awards ceremony was largely conducted online, with only the hosts and presenters appearing in person.
Joanna Scanlan broke down in tears backstage at the EE BAFTA Film Awards after pipping Lady Gaga and others to the post to win the award for Lead Actress. During the glitzy ceremony, hosted by Rebel Wilson, viewers watched as Joanna, 60, was left open-mouthed at being crowned the winner for her role in British film After Love.
Naman Ramachandran While the actual BAFTA film awards ceremony on Sunday may have been largely apolitical, the red carpet leading up to it was awash with political commentary.“The Power of the Dog” star and BAFTA best actor nominee Benedict Cumberbatch, who attended the event with his wife Sophie Hunter, wore a badge depicting the Ukrainian flag.Cumberbatch said the awards are “a celebration of an industry that’s about imagery, and images speaking as loud as if not louder sometimes than words. So it’s a small gesture,” the actor told BBC News.“But away from this, what we all have to do is continue to put pressure on our politicians as far as the refugee crisis goes, continue to put pressure on the Putin regime, continue to help in any which way we can — whether that’s through donations or housing refugees, all of which I’m looking to do and have done.” The U.K.
The Power of the Dog was named best film at tonight’s 75th British Academy Film Awards (BAFTAs), as the New Zealander also scooped best director. During a star-studded ceremony at London’s Royal Albert Hall, sci-fi epic Dune also triumphed with five gongs, and Kenneth Branagh’s semi-autobiographical Belfast was named Outstanding British Film. The Power of the Dog’s male star, Benedict Cumberbatch, was on hand to read out the absent Campion’s victory speech for her best director award.
Kenneth Branagh and his wife Lindsay Brunnock cut a glamorous pair as they posed arm-in-arm on the red carpet at this year's BAFTA Film Awards at the Royal Albert Hall in London on Sunday. Director Sir Kenneth, 61, whose movie Belfast won the Outstanding British Film gong and was nominated in the Best Film category, looked dapper in a black tuxedo and crisp white shirt. Lindsay, 52, coordinated with her filmmaker partner by wearing a floor-length black dress with a leg split.
None of the six women who are nominated for Best Actress at the 2022 EE British Academy Film Awards are nominated for the same award at the Oscars this year.
Manori Ravindran International EditorRebel Wilson, one of the BAFTA Awards’ most memorable presenters in past years, did not disappoint as its host. The “Pitch Perfect” actor stole the show on Sunday during the first BAFTA Awards to take place in-person since the organizations’s groundbreaking 2020 diversity review.Wilson presented the best director award at the ceremony in 2020 and brought the house down with a gag-filled speech that in one fell swoop managed to burn Prince Harry, Prince Andrew, COVID-19 (then still but a conceptual threat for Brits), the lack of swag bags, “Cats” (in which she starred) and the lack of women nominated for best director. No one was spared from Wilson’s numerous barbs during the 2022 ceremony either. While not every joke landed with the British crowd — and were further challenged by the cavernous acoustics of the Royal Albert Hall — one attendee remarked that Wilson deserved a standing ovation for her hosting duties. The absence of Prince William — who is president of BAFTA — and Princess Kate likely allowed Wilson to let rip, and the actor-comedian certainly didn’t hold back in taking the Royal family to task.
