The shorter days, longer nights and colder air means that the country is well into the throes of winter. The change in season comes with many things including the festive time of the year with the Christmas spirit beginning to spread.
However, there is also another phenomena that the winter seasons brings. Seasonal affective disorder, aptly known as SAD, is a type of depression that occurs as the seasons change.
SAD can occur during the summer months, but it is commonly known as “winter depression” and affects millions of people across the world. It is believed that SAD is caused due to the lack of sunlight.

Courtnee Forrester, is a therapist from Hulme with four years of experience. She says that in the autumn and winter months she sees a 40% increase in clients due to SAD.
However, while the weather plays a huge role, Courtnee, 32, believes that SAD could be a trigger that exacerbates underlying mental health issues that we feel the need to supress due to the societal pressures of being ‘happy’ during the Christmas period.
“People say to me, ‘I’m only here for a couple of weeks’, but I know that’s not going to be true and I let them know that.” She told the MEN.
“Between September and October, when the weather is changing, that’s the point when seasonal depression starts. For some counsellors that’s the peak, they get an influx of clients because everyone wants to be happy for Christmas but that’s not how it works.
