It’s easy to see why Le Jardin Majorelle is one of the most popular destinations for visitors to Marrakech. Not only is it a cool and quiet oasis providing a definite step-change from the madness of the Souk (Old Town), but for those who love fashion, it’s also known as the Yves Saint Laurent Garden, having been purchased and greatly enhanced in the 1980’s by the French designer.
A short 15-minute taxi ride from the Souk, Le Jardin Majorelle draws crowds, so it’s best to visit first thing in the morning before the queues start to form. We booked ahead (also recommended and easily done online) and were given an allotted time slot - but don’t let this put you off, once inside you can spend as long or as little as you like exploring these beautiful gardens.
Originally designed by the French Artist, Jacques Majorelle, the gardens took over 40 years to develop and time and effort were spent to gather and include many exotic flowers and plants from across the globe. But it’s not just the planting that makes this garden unique in Marrakesh.
Both Art Deco and Moorish influences have been used in the brightly coloured buildings, pots and walkways that are dotted through the meandering gardens. Everything you associate with Morocco in terms of brilliant colour is to be found here, and the structured planting is brilliantly set off by the introduction of cobalt blues, vibrant yellows and soft turquoise into the landscaping.
In 1980 Yves St Laurent and his partner Pierre Berge saved the gardens from developers and continued to develop and nurture them from their home in Jacques Majorelle’s villa which they renamed Villa Oasis.
The gardens inspired many of Yves St Laurent’s collections and he adored being there. After his death in

Lise Pedersen In an exclusive interview with Variety after picking up the top industry prize at Swiss documentary festival Visions du Réel, Franco-Iranian director Mehran Tamadon outlined the intention of his upcoming feature documentary “The Last Days of the Hospital.” Set against the backdrop of France’s public health crisis and shortage of personnel, the film will show patients from a psychiatric hospital on the outskirts of Paris taking charge of their own ward. Tamadon has been running film workshops with the patients at the hospital for the past eight years, and decided it was time to make a film to denounce what he describes as “the ultra-liberal policy which plans the death of the public hospital.” “French public hospitals are not doing well, nurses and caregivers are leaving because they are mistreated and poorly paid.

Lise Pedersen Two new cash prizes introduced this year in Swiss film festival Visions du Reel’s industry section, VdR-Industry, were among a flurry of awards handed out as the program wrapped in Nyon, Switzerland, on Wednesday. The Eurimages Co-production Development Award, created to promote the fund’s role in encouraging international co-production from the initial stages of a project, and which comes with a cash prize of €20,000 ($22,000), went to “The Last Days of the Hospital” by Mehran Tamadon (“My Worst Enemy,” “Bassidji”).

Over its full five-day opening run, it took an even more spectacular $73 million. China was the last major territory to play the Studio Ghibli-produced fantasy in cinemas – it released in its native Japan in July and is imminently headed to streaming in many other territories – but that did not stop Chinese audiences from lapping it up. While most films release in China on a Friday, “The Boy and the Heron” was given a Wednesday outing in order to capture momentum from the Thursday-to-Saturday Qingming public holiday. Consultancy firm Artisan reports that it earned RMB248 million ($34.9 million) over the conventional Friday-to-Sunday weekend.
