NATAS Boss Reveals New Emmy Categories for Puppetry, Plus an Update on When the Postponed Daytime Emmys Might Happen

Michael Schneider Variety Editor at Large Here’s some news that might even cheer up Oscar the Grouch: The National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences has created two new Emmy categories for puppetry performance and puppet design/styling. Both awards will be handed out at this year’s second-ever Children’s & Family Emmys. “Historically, puppetry performers would enter in the live action performer categories,” said NATAS CEO Adam Sharp, in announcing the new competition. “So, if you were the handler of a puppet, then you would go up against a lead actor or lead actress, and that created for some odd pairings. But managing a puppet is a very different kind of performance than a regular live action performance.”

Emmy Awards criticised for nominating Bella Ramsey for Best Actress

The Last Of Us is non-binary, and has recently shared their hope for gender-neutral categories at award ceremonies. The 19-year-old has been nominated for the award alongside alongside Sarah Snook (Succession), Sharon Horgan (Bad Sisters), Elisabeth Moss (The Handmaid’s Tale), Melanie Lynskey (Yellowjackets) and Keri Russell (The Diplomat) at the 2023 Emmys, and many have shared their dislike of the choice, owing to Ramsey’s gender-fluid identity, which they revealed earlier this year.“‘best actress’ for an openly nonbinary person who wore a binder the entire filming hahahahaha sick,” one wrote on social media.Another added: “Award shows need more inclusive categories for people with gender-expansive identities.”‘best actress’ for an openly nonbinary person who wore a binder the entire filming hahahahaha sick https://t.co/YR3sB3Rpzr— dyke wazowski (@sillygoofyz) July 12, 2023Award shows need more inclusive categories for people with gender-expansive identities.— Zillastorm (@Zillastorm) July 12, 2023In an interview after the nomination was announced, The Last Of Us creator Craig Mazin said that he had spoken with Ramsey about the situation, and that it’s “a really interesting challenge” in the film industry. He told Variety: “On the one hand, the conversation about gender has transformed dramatically and in a very progressive and positive way.“On the other, we have to practically make sure that by moving away from gendered categories, we don’t short-change traditionally overlooked folks… and we know that in non-gendered categories like directing and writing, women have been historically under-appreciated.”Earlier this year, Ramsey called for “more space” for non-binary actors at awards shows.

HBO’s Emmy Dominance Proves the Value of Risk Despite Turbulent Cable Company and Leadership

Daniel D'Addario Chief TV Critic HBO dominating the Emmy nominations is hardly a surprise, given both historical trends and the year they’ve had. But it couldn’t have come at a more crucial time. Amid endless media speculation around the cuts and bad P.R. missteps of Warner Bros. Discovery chief David Zaslav, HBO — notionally the jewel in the crown of the newly-formed WBD’s television empire — cleaned up. In the best drama race, HBO picked up a startling four nominations (for “House of the Dragon,” “The Last of Us,” “Succession” and “The White Lotus”). In a happy coincidence, those four nominations, which tie an all-time record, represented the two halves of what HBO has lately done well, between pushing IP-driven storytelling to new heights in the cases of “House of the Dragon” and “The Last of Us” and turning carefully wrought, creator-driven drama into organic zeitgeist hits with “Succession” and “The White Lotus.”

The series was the cornerstone of HBO’s total tally of 127 nominations, including shows that also ran on the streamer previously known as HBO Max (now just Max). Netflix weighed in with 103 mentions. “Succession” raked in 27 bids, including a history-making troika of noms in the lead actor drama category for Brian Cox, Kieran Culkin and Jeremy Strong. Last year the series grabbed 25 nominations and went all the way to take the top prize for drama series. Also adding heft to HBO’s tally this year was the acclaimed freshman drama “The Last of Us,” with 24,” and “The White Lotus” at 23.
